ECZ chairperson Irene Mambilima has told Journalists during a media briefing this afternoon that the decision was arrived at because of the unprecedented intolerance and violence among political parties which led to the death of one person.
Justice Mabilima has however stated that the Mpongwe parliamentary by-election and the thirty six local government by-elections will go ahead as planned tomorrow Thursday, February 28.
She said political parties taking part in the postponed Livingstone Parliamentary by-election will not be allowed to conduct any public campaigns besides placing campaign adverts in the media.
The Livingstone campaign violence on Monday claimed the life of PF Monze district vice Chairperson Harrison Chanda who was murdered by suspected UPND cadres during clashes with PF cadres.
Meanwhile Justice Mambilima has also expressed great concern with the deliberate disregard of the Electoral Code of Conduct and the Commission’s mandate by some political parties and the police in the country.
She has reiterated that it is only the ECZ that is legally mandated to conduct elections in the country and that the Commission will not stand by to see the good name that Zambia earned after the 2011 tripartite elections tarnished by the continuous abrogation of the electoral regulations.
