The Road Development Agency (RDA) has awarded a KR 562 million contract to Sino Hydro Zambia Limited to construct a 45.5 Kilometers dual carriageway between Kitwe and Chingola on the Copperbelt Province.
RDA Chief Executive Officer Bernard Chiwala said at a signing ceremony in Lusaka this morning that the contract will be undertaken within 24 Months from the date of execution.
Mr. Chiwala said the contractor is expected to mobilize within 60 days.
He says the scope of the contract include the construction of an entirely new south bound road on the eastern side of the existing road using cement stabilized side base, crushed stone base and asphalt concrete overlay as wearing course.
It also includes the construction of new junctions, new drainages and the provision of road furniture.
And Sino Hydro Chief Executive Officer Liu Benjiang said his company will do its best in putting a quality road infrastructure that will stand a test of time.
Speaking at the same occasion on behalf of Copperbelt Province Mayors, Kitwe City Mayor Chileshe Bweupe hailed the Patriotic Front government for committing to improve road infrastructure in the country.
Mr. Bweupe said the Kitwe – Chingola road is of great economic importance as it links Zambia to the neighboring democratic republic of Congo.
He said the dual carriage therefore will also reduce high incidences of road traffic accidents on the road.

You are right. That road is a let down. I was telling an MMD supporter sometime back about the pot holes and he told me off that I was just dreaming.

Speaking of roads and votes; I know numbers matter in politics too, How about a dual along UTH road (Nationalist road which peradventure may lead into working on hospital roads and car parks.
There is quite some space if you look hard. Otherwise the place is clogged up! A patient may even die in traffic or while trying to find a spot.

Am saying, this contract price translates to US$2.5million per kilometer, which is almost 22.5 million RANDS. Those high traffic volume roads we admire in South Africa are constructed at an average price of R7million RANDS! So, we expect a really good and durable piece of work here. Mr Chiwala should be telling how thick ( depth) the tar surface is, and also how wide this road will be. Guys mwilasubafye to bitumen pamaloba naka thin layer kwati in Vaseline ka? Pantu umbi nawo immunity ikapwilapo Pali Uyu musebo!

This is another ejaculatory project!
I hope someone is Auditing this expenditure.
This cost per kilometer on this road is three times the cost of doing a similar kilometer in South Africa.
I am sure there are many subcontracting beneficiaries on this blog, hence the blind praises!

This move is very welcome albeit a little late. I just wonder whether the RDA has thought about putting up a permanent road toll gate on the same road. The traffic on this road includes a lot of trucks and it would be prudent to collect some kind of toll to plough back into the maintenance of the same road. We should learn something from our colleagues in RSA on how they manage the Bakwena Highway (N1). This road has several toll gates, but one appreciates that it is very well maintained, all the time. Otherwise, kudos to RDA for this move.
