DELEGATES to the national constitutional convention have rejected proposals for a degree as a minimum qualification for a presidential candidate.
The delegates have instead retained Article 97(e) stipulating a minimum qualification of grade 12 certificate or its equivalent for one to qualify as a presidential candidate.
Kalomo member of Parliament Request Muntanga argued that the acquisition of a degree is not the only way one can analyse and make decisions as president.
But a University of Zambia (UNZA) representative Deborah Taulo argued that there is need for a president to hold a minimum academic qualification of a university degree.
Ms Taulo said there are now more universities and it is easy to obtain a degree now, compared to the past.
And the delegates have also retained Article 75(3) which states: “Elections to district councils shall be conducted under the first-past-the -post system in accordance with Article 214.”
The delegates observed that rural areas have fewer incentives to retain people with higher academic

Which Universities is Debora talking about? We’ve only had UNZA and CBU as Govt run universities, the rest are not and cannot offer govt bursaries to the intelligent poor fellows who’ve passed so well at grade 12. Should we say these fellows shouldn’t be presidents just because they couldn’t get degrees? Many are those with degrees especially from pvt universities than without but with very poor results at grade 12.

human wisdom is based on what man has achieved e.g science, works and organisations and these all can be attained by mere qualification. our Leaders need wisdom from above. That’s the right direction fellows.

Already she has shown why a degree is not neccessary as a qualification to stand as Presidential cadidate. You want to form a certain ruling class?Indeed unza Taulo has not given u wisdom. An above average grade 12 can’t fail to interplate issues.

Listen failures, degree shud b a must besides wisdom. Education is there to help analystical and critical thinking. That’s. Why we r failing to come up wit meaningful development because of having failures in higher offices eg misplaced priority by the current govt, every day by elections for forgetting to develop. America our role model has been ruled by intellectuals that’s a reason enuf they develop.

You have a point there. But you know what kills us Africans the most. It’s grid. Our few so called educated leaders are just out there to make money for themselves. And it’s all cost.

Education does not make one a good leader. This world has witnessed uneducated great leaders. Grade 12 is good enough. It a heart and the wisdom that makes a great leader.

Even dgrees have classifications. You are ku forefront but wenze ku chikwakwa! I think ma gegrees yanu yenze ma accidents if all you think about are “degrees”. Lets not be primitive. Education is cardinal, but it should never be used as a tool for opressing others. Some of us were sent to UNZA by parents who were not that educated.
