A THIRTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD woman of Chilubi District in Northern Province has given birth in a banana boat.
The incident happened when the expectant mother was being ferried to Santa Maria Hospital on Chilubi Island for medical attention.
Chilubi District community health officer Ernest Mutale confirmed this, saying the woman was referred to Santa Maria Hospital on the island due to pregnancy complications.
Dr Mutale said because of a lack of reliable transport, the woman ended up delivering in the canoe.
Dr Mutale, who is stationed at Santa Maria Hospital on Chilubi Island, appealed to the Government to send transport to Chilubi health office to serve the community both on Chilubi Island and the surrounding areas.
And Northern Province Permanent Secretary Hlobotha Nkunika, who is in Chilubi District on a tour of development projects, described the incident as unfortunate.
Mr Nkunika said he would make sure that adequate transport was provided to the department of health to ease people’s transportation in the district.
He, however, said the Government had started the construction of a general hospital while a district hospital was earmarked for Chilubi Island.
Mr Nkunika appealed to the people of Chilubi to give the Government time to facilitate tangible development in the area. – ZANIS

While we do not expect a yacht, it would help to buy motorised boats for our friends living in the ‘water world’ before your dream hopitals are built. After all they’ll still be understaffed!!!!
