Financial challenges have hit Levy Mwanawasa stadium. Mwape Kasanda (Levy Mwanawasa Assistant Director) recently revealed :
“We are faced with financial challenges in maintaining the stadium because the funds that we are given monthly are not enough for us to maintain this facility. We therefore call upon you Members of Parliament (MPs) to push for the increase of budgetary allocation to the stadium so that we can manage the facility with efficiency it deserves..”
The stadium needs KR211,000 every month for effective maintenance works to be carried out. Of that amount KR83,000 is funded by a government grant. An additional KR100,000 is raised every month from hiring out the stadium for functions. Which has left a shortfall. Which is likely to rise over time as maintenance costs increase over time. Kasanda wants MPs to push for the increase of budgetary allocation for the stadium in the 2014 national Budget. He also needs more money for maintenance equipment.
We are currently pushing forward more stadium constructions. The challenges facing Levy Mwanawasa is food for thought on whether these modern stadiums provide value for money in the long term, given the huge infrastructure costs upfront and associated maintenance. The problem is that Zambia does not have high quality sports events that people would pay for regularly to be hosted at Levy Mwanawasa. Indeed when other stadiums are built (Lusaka is already finishing the second stadium) Levy may even struggle more. And there’s talk of Mongu getting a stadium – again more competition.

iwe…people need food and you are talking about the stadium…zambian football has failed us..just lease that stadium to would be interested and agree on terms of usage and maintenance;start paying for it each time the national team wants to use it..why waste resources on non-revenue entities…..shallow minds!

Boastful Banda uli cipuba. We can’t lease that stadium just now it will look like Musa Kasonka within one month. What Kasanda is saying is right but they should market the stadium so that it makes money

ba mwamba..hope muli ba mwamba mwaume; if you cant manage the stadium in its early stages what do you expect in the long term? find credible entities to manage it and not utuntemba. musa kasonka is in that state because it was given to people without foresight..i mentioned something like “on agreed terms and conditions”..fine tune your thinking maybe it needs caliberation…

K211,000. Okey Government K80,000, Hiring for whatever K100,000. This adds up to K180,000 giving us a shortfall of K31,000.
Question,is ZESCO utd part part of hiring in K100,000
Suggestion, Let a lot of companies put billboreds and pay for space. That stadium hosts about two games nearly every week. Ask for semething from gate takings.

Fellow Zambians, let us learn to turn problems into oportunities. This moaning and groaning about everything will lead us nowhere. Next thing that will happen is that we shall be asking for a loan from China to maintain the facility. Please, its time to grow up.

This what happens when the minister in charge is a crook.Stop these by elections and channel all the funds into hospitals and schools colleges and universities. Why are they building another pitch in Mongu when they’re already failing to maintain the one in Ndola. This is a trial error type of government with no idea of running a government. This is why UKWA is scared of the media. We need capital and technology investment in schools Hopsitals not football pitches

I live in hillcrest extension, just next to the stadium. I must say that, the best would be to allow a private entity to run the stadium on a purely commercial basis. This will bring in other sports such as rugby, athletics etc. The once beautiful loan around the stadium is in a sorry state. Better still stop constructing useless buildings.
