Sleeping On Duty: 9 Escape From Kafue Estates Police Cell

NINE suspects have escaped police custody at Industrial police post in Kafue Estates in unexplained circumstances.
Kafue member of parliament Obvious Mwaliteta confirmed the incident, which happened on Saturday around 02:00 hours when the officer who was manning the police post went on patrol.
Mwaliteta wondered why the officer decided to conduct patrol, leaving the station unmanned.
He has since instructed criminal investigation officer (CIO) for the police post, an Inspector Kanfwa, to detain the officer who was on duty.
And Inspector Kanfwa told Mwaliteta that six of the escapees were facing aggravated robbery while the other three, among them a Grade 12 pupil at Naboye Secondary School, had defilement-related cases.
He revealed that three of the escapees had been arrested in connection with a robbery which took place at the District Education Board Secretariat in Kafue last month.
Inspector Kanfwa said when the officer returned from his patrols, he found the suspects struggling to get out of the police cells.
He said the officer managed to grab an iron bar which they were using to break out of the cell, after which he fired two shots in the air.
But Kafue Estates residents said the manner in which the suspects escaped raised a lot of questions.
Moses Munamovwe who spoke on behalf of the residents, alleged that the move was planned by police officers who deliberately left the police post unmanned, to give room to the suspects to escape.
Munamovwe said that residents had lost confidence in the police officers in Kafue because of the way they were carrying out their duties.
He said police officers at most police posts, especially during night shift, reported for work drunk, making it impossible for them to execute their duties in a professional manner.
Munamovwe said urgent action was needed to address the situation.

The officer was probably trying to put more money in his pocket in these hard economic times.
