Rabson Muchelenga’nga Dropped, Suffers Blame For Nkana Defeat

Chipolopolo coach Herve Renard has surprisingly dropped Nchanga Rangers goalkeeper Rabson Muchelenga’nga following an embarrassing 2-1 defeat the team suffered to Super Division leaders Nkana on Wednesday.

Muchelenga’nga was sent home last night. A check at Levy Stadium during the team’s morning training session confirmed the player was not among those that were going through drills or even on the bench resting.

In what seems an impulsive decision, Renard has dropped Muchelenga’nga and three others from the team that is preparing for the June 8 Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho and a week later Sudan.

Muchelenga’nga, who Renard had given the nod to replace suspended firstchoice custodian Kennedy Mweene, has largely been blamed for the loss to Nkana which has attracted intense criticism of the team ahead of the World Cup qualifiers next month.

The Rangers player was in goal in last Sunday’s friendly against Namibia when Chipolopolo produced a goalless result in Windhoek. Renard was seemingly impressed with the former Power Dynamos goalie and was preparing him for the big one at Levy Stadium on June 8. But the worst was yet to come.

Renard is struggling to find a replacement for Mweene. He initially had settled for Power Dynamos goal-minder Joshua Titima but when the player snubbed the trials for goalkeepers he was sidelined and not selected.
The Frenchman called trials for goalminders and the expected players like Davy Kaumbwa, Muchelenga’nga, Kenny Mumbaand Danny Munyao pitched up. Only Titima apparently refused to show up on instruction from his club who found the trials a waste of time.

Titima, who stood in for Mweene after the sending off in Maseru, was spotted at his club training when he had excused himself from trials on account of injury much to the displeasure of Renard.

Renard hit back at Titima by leaving him out of the team that travelled to Nambia where Muchelenga’nga was handed the mantle to keep the Zambian goal mouth clean. While the former Under 20 goal keeper maintained a clean slate in Namibia, he failed to convince Renard against Nkana when he allowed two first half goals.

To blame the goalminder to a point of dropping him, if true, tells you of what I prefer to refer to as paralysis of analysis. If the goals were Muchelenga’nga’s errors I expect Renard to look beyond the goal keeper. Where and how were the balls lost. How quick were the players in getting behind the ball when defending? Okey if Nkana scored because of his error was it because of that that our strikers failed to score as many goals against Nkana?
To me the problem now appears to be that of failing to identify what the areas of weaknesses are and which player to play in which position.
