A 33-YEAR-OLD man of Mkushi has told the Kabwe High Court that the game meat for which he was arrested belonged to a traditional healer.
This was in a matter in which Kabwe High Court judge Eddie Sikazwe confirmed a five-year sentence on Richard Swelimba for unlawful possession of Government trophy.
Justice Sikazwe told Swelimba that his sentence was with effect from November 2, 2009.
Swelimba told the court that he got the meat of a sable from a traditional healer who has eloped with his sister.
“The animal was in his bag and when he ran away, I was left with the bag. That is how I was arrested,” he said.
He said the animal was widely used in Mkushi and since his childhood, he has known that traditional healers also use it for medicinal purposes.
But Justice Sikazwe said: “I will sentence you to five years imprisonment with hard labour with effect from 2nd September 2009.”
Before the same court was Kelvin Siachilila, who was sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a cow valued at KR1,800.
He stole the animal on February 6, 2010. The offence was contrary to section 137 (1) Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Justice Sikazwe told Siachilila that his sentence was with effect from February 6, 2010.
