Nkumbula Airport Workers Boycott After Death of Colleague

WORKERS at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport’s new terminal yesterday boycotted work after one of their colleagues fell and later died at the Livingstone General Hospital.
The workers staged the boycott demanding that safety measures be put in place for them while on duty.
Southern Province police commissioner Charity Katanga confirmed the death of 22-year-old Kelvin Mwale, an electrician of house number A17 Airport compound who fell from the scaffold around 16:00 hours on Friday.
Katanga said Mwale was rushed to the hospital where he died at 16:35 hours.
And one of Mwale’s workmates who sought anonymity said his colleague was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the accident.
“The place where he fell from is very high and he sustained a lot of injuries. He broke his ribs, his pelvis, arms and legs. It was a terrible accident and some of us are shaken about what happened. We need safety garments and attires to protect us from such accidents,” he said.
According to another source, another worker cut his hands with a grinder after operating the machine without safety gear and was also rushed to hospital immediately after Mwale’s accident.
“After the two accidents we were given some safety kits but we have lost a friend and one is injured. We have been working without proper safety kits,” he said.
And in another case, a 41-year-old man died early yesterday after a vehicle hit into his house while he was asleep.
The man identified as Geoffrey Sibbanga of house number H287 Zecco compound in Libuyu died around 00:30 hours.
Katanga said involved was a green unregistered Land Cruiser driven by 29-year-old Fred Zulu of house number C391 Libuyu compound.
“The accident happened around 00:30 hours along Mombochima Road off kaunda road and it happened when the vehicle lost control and due to excessive speed hit into house number H287 and hit Sibbanga 41 who was sleeping,” said Katanga. “… The victim died on the spot and his body is lying in Batoka Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem. The driver is in police custody charged with causing death by dangerous driving.”

ma accident kupaka.working from heights higher than 3m, u need a full body haness and a life line. a grinder is dangerous to use with or without gloves. u need skilled manpower to handle it.i remember my boy who was hit by a car, fell on the road, got stuck under the car sanding him over a length of 500m coz the driver did not stop.he lost his arms and almost 70 percent of the skin.gruesome accidents indeed.
