The Bemba Royal Establishment has expressed concern over the manner in which the PF government has continued to directly interfere in the Bemba tradition and chiefs affairs.
Patrick Mucheleka a member of the royal family says the government’s recognition of Chiefs Chewe and Chimbuka respectively in Chinsali District of Muchinga Province, without any regard to the Bemba tradition and procedures is unacceptable.
Mr. Mucheleka, who is also Lubansenshi Member of Parliament, says with regard to Chief Chewe who is supposed to come from Ngoshemukote lineage, this family lost their traditional rights to become chiefs when they were banished in 1870 during the reign of Chitimukulu Sampa Kapalakasha.
He adds that it is unacceptable to bring back an issue in 2013 that was dealt with more than 140 years ago.
Mr. Mucheleka says government’s interference in the chief’s affairs is aimed at weakening the Bemba Royal Establishment.
He has since appealed to the Bemba speaking people and other people of goodwill to stand up in solidarity with the Bemba Chiefs and Bashilubemba to protect the traditional setup.
Meanwhile, Village Headmen in Nakonde district of Muchinga Province have appealed to Government through the Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs to consider putting them on a salary.
According to the letter submitted to Chieftainess Nawaitwika of the Namwanga People during her sensitization tour on early marriages at Chilolwa health centre grounds yesterday, the village headmen appealed to Government to consider start paying them for the work they do in the community.

It’s saddening that President Sata could wake up one day and declare Senior Chief Mwamba as masquerading when he has been on the throne for many year and he is the right heir to the throne of Chitimukulu. What is to masquerade? BashiLubemba will not agree to be tossed about by politicians.

The disgraceful way in which this PF govt is conducting itself over the Bemba Royal Establishment will soon backfire. We know that senior chief Nkula has performed all the rights of passage to succeed his uncle as per our traditions, but he was comandereed to leave his palace at gun point by ZP, such that he ended up overdosing on his malaria treatment. Sata called him an impostor.
After this, within a month or 2 chief Mwamba was treated as described above by my cousin.
This is unacceptable as it reflects deliberate interference & intimidation so that the chiefs live in mortal fear.
We are born royalty and no intimidations or machinations by this govt will change our lineage.
The Bemba Royal Establishment & the Bemba people will react if pushed too far by Nkandu Luo & Sata.
