Whilst other Zambian students studying in other places have been issued the allowances there is still no news as to when the students in Algeria should expect the allowances.
The allowances are due since 1st May. Usually the students receive the funds from the Zambian embassy in Egypt but due to problems in Egypt the Embassy in Cairo declared that they would no longer be able to make timely payments to students hence the need for alternative ways.
It’s quite a trend that the funds are always received 1 month or so later but last time the students had to wait until 1st March 2013 to be paid the allowances that were due on 1st January 2013,a situation that prompted the Embassy in Cairo to make the declaration to Bursaries Committee.
Its sad however that despite being informed timely( in March), Bursaries Committee(Ministry of Education) in Lusaka have to this point not made a decision as to how or when the students in Algeria will be given these monies.
These are about 216 Zambian students in Algeria who do not have any diplomatic representation on the ground. The students feel they are not being given the same attention as other Zambian students in other places, they feel they are being neglected.
There are other issues and difficulties the students have been facing on there on with seemingly little interest on the authorities responsible for this scholarship both on the Algerian side and the Zambian side. Take in mind that that these are students living in a region hit by political instability as is evidenced by the uprisings.
How can it take them months to sort this out. Funny enough they probably are still going to send another group of 44 students on the same scholarship without knowing how they will be paying them.
