FODEP Challenges Govt To Reveal To The Nation Real Cost Of By-Elections

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) has challenged Commerce, Trade and Industry Deputy Minister, Miles Sampa to tell the nation the real cost of the by-elections that have been held this year.
FODEP Executive Director, MacDonald Chipenzi says the figures Mr. Sampa gave are unacceptable.

Mr Sampa has disclosed that government has so far spent K17 billion on by-elections after the K5 billion allocated was exhausted.

Mr. Chipenzi says government should revisit their calculations and give the nation the exact figures instead of giving wrong figures.

He says the Zambian people are tired of government officials battering them with lies.

He says people want to hear the truth and not lies.
Mr. Chipenzi says K7 billion has so far been spent on Feira by-election alone therefore it is not justifiable for the former Finance Deputy Minister to say K17 billion has been spent on all the four by-elections held so far this year.

He says the cost is expected to be above K20 billion.

True figures should be told to the public yes this is good to know but we as a pipo we cannot avoid it. The constitution clearly say there shall be by elections in case of deaths, resignations or general incapacitation of a holder of that particular seat. And THE CONSTITUTION SHOULD BE RESPECTED UNDER WHATEVER CIRCUMSTANCES. WE SHOULD KNOW THE REAL AMOUNT SPENT BUT WE CANNOT AVOID IT.

By election is something better minds need to address in order to avoid such humongous spending. In the case of the demise of an incumbent, either the 2nd best candidate takes over or the demised parliamentarian’s party appoints a care taker, whichever works better. The goal here is to use that money in other sectors of the economy. In the case of resignation, the same rule applies. Whether by elections be supported by the constitution, that statute can owayz amended for the benefit of Zambians.

Oppositions were not supporting good policies in parliament so they are just reaping from their spoil.
