GOLDEN Phiri, the businessman who recently married Mazabuka police officer-commanding Lizzie Machina, is still legally married to another woman in Lusaka, The Post has learnt. According to a certificate of marriage, number 04944, Phiri was married to Emma Chima, a billing officer, under customary law on November 27, 2010 and their marriage was consummated under the marriage Act on December 6, 2010. According to the certificate of marriage, Samson Lungu and Hachwell Chima witnessed the marriage at Lusaka City Council. When contacted for comment, Phiri claimed the matter was in court and promised to provide the case number later.
“The story is in the High Court, I took the matter to the court sometime back,” he said. Asked what he wanted from court, Phiri said Emma was the one who divorced him in the presence of relatives from both families. “I am ready to testify. I tried to plead with her, I said I was sorry, but she refused saying she doesn’t want marriage with me,” he said. Phiri also said even Inspector General of Police Stella Libongani had approached some people to find out how the issue could be resolved. However, Emma told The Post that she wanted her marriage with Phiri properly dissolved. “As far as I am concerned, I am still legally married to him; here is our marriage certificate,” she said.
Emma explained that since their marriage in 2010 until last year when they separated, she had lived a troubled marriage with Phiri. “We never lived well. Most of the time he was never home and he would not pick calls when phoned. I also came to find out that he had multiple partners because he would come home with women underwear. When he was confronted about the underwear for other women, he said he bought them from salaula (second hand clothes) because he likes them,” she said. Emma said she was informed that Phiri had another woman in Mazabuka and that the two were planning to marry. “In December 2012, he even told me to go if I wanted and I left to my own house in Kabanana because I could not bear it anymore. But then I wanted him to give me back the money K70 million I gave him before we got married and when he could not give me, I lodged a complaint with Victim Support Unit at Central Police where I was told I willingly gave him the money and I was referred to the Small Claims Court where I was also referred to the High Court. So it was while at the High Court that I found out that he has even married another woman,” she said. “I want the law to be followed. I want a divorce, nothing else. How come he has married another woman when he has an active, legal marriage with me? Does the law allow this in Zambia?”
And Machina said she met Phiri outside Mike’s Car Wash in October 2012 and in January this year and that he paid dowry on April 14.
Machina said Phiri’s persistence led her to fall in love with him. “At first I was not in love, but his persistence made me to love him more. He took me to his house and I was escorted by my cousin. There I met him, the uncle, the cousin and the two children and from then I started going to his home (in Lusaka) and he started to come to my home (Mazabuka),” Machina said.
“He was married before and I’m told that the woman died. I had proof from the son because I communicate very well with his first son. Actually, when I was introduced, he called his children and asked; ‘are you happy with her’, and the children said ‘yes’. The uncle said it was too early for him to say anything,” Machina explained.

If you have been living a terrible life why do you wantto cling to this marriage? If he really owes you that money you can take him to law! Leave the newly wed alone.
