Fr. Bwalya Demands K500,000 From Times For Libel

FRANK Bwalya is demanding K500,000 from the Times of Zambia as damages for publishing what he termed a libelous story.
In a letter addressed to the news editor at Times Printpak Zambia Limited, Bwalya, who is Alliance for Better Zambia president, made reference to the stories published in the Times of Zambia on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 and Thursday, May 16, 2013 under the headlines ‘Fr Bwalya backs gays’ and ‘Fr Bwalya under fire’.

Bwalya stated that in the story under the headline ‘Fr Bwalya backs gays’, the newspaper falsely and maliciously reported that he publicly supported gay marriages.

“Motivated by your usual malice against me you went ahead the following day Thursday, May 16, 2013 to cause to be published another false and malicious statement by one Reverend Pukuta Mwanza, director of Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia the following words; ‘He, Fr Bwalya is being used by Western groups who have promised to fund his political career but this is wrong and we will not accept this,…” stated Bwalya.

Bwalya demanded a retraction and an appropriate apology whose wording and manner of publication should be expressly approved by him.

He stated the payment of K 500,000 as damages and the apology should be fulfilled within nine days from the date of the letter of demand, failure to which he would have no option but to commence legal proceedings against the Times of Zambia without any further recourse to the newspaper.

Bwalya stated that these stories against him were extremely serious and highly injurious because the obvious inference from these malicious stories was that he encouraged conduct that was illegal in Zambia and that he promotes practices that were deemed intrinsically immoral in Zambia as a Christian nation and his church, the Roman Catholic Church.

He stated that the newspaper managed in the eyes of right thinking members of society to paint him as a person who supports law breakers and those who engage in immoral practices which was an offence in itself.

“You also managed to maliciously portray me as a Roman Catholic Priest who propagated practices contrary to the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church which is a serious offence to be committed by a Roman Catholic Priest. You also managed to portray me as a politician who had chosen to promote illegal and immoral practices in exchange for money to advance my political career,” stated Bwalya.

Bwalya stated that as a confirmation that the newspaper’s motivation was malice and that they just manufactured the stories to destroy what he described as his hard-earned reputation, which he stated was his only real asset, the paper threw to the winds media ethics and professionalism by not getting in touch with him to get his side of the story.

He stated that for sure, the story was not a matter of life and death that needed to be published urgently, hence there was no justification to rush to publish the story.

“I do believe that if you were concerned about truth and objectivity you would have afforded to wait until you got my reaction before publishing your malicious stories,” stated Bwalya.

Father Bwalya! You thought you were clever when you went to give a talk at an OSISA workshop. You thought people do not know that OSISA supports LGBTI to the effect that they are paying the legal fees for a case involving a gay HIV activist in the Zambian High Court. Next time choose the right workshops to attend.

It is now a black hyper-masculinity and urban aesthetic shaped by hip-hop culture and ‘video-mercials’ that not only exploit women, but also unabashedly denigrate and go after lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. And they care little about its deleterious effects on all children – straight and gay.
