Kalu, Many Other Zambians REJECT ‘Disaster Stadium’ Name “We want it named Heroes National Stadium”

Kalusha Bwalya
FOOTBALL Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Kalusha Bwalya says the 50,000 capacity stadium under construction in Lusaka should be called ‘Heroes Stadium’ and not Gabon Disaster Heroes National Stadium.
Kalusha yesterday tweeted that ‘Heroes Stadium’ is more appropriate as it will include the heroic performances by national teams of 1974, 1993, 1994 and that for 2012 which won the Africa Cup.
On Tuesday, Minister of Sport and Youth Chishimba Kambwili announced that Cabinet approved that the stadium will be called Gabon Disaster Heroes National Stadium.
“The newly built stadium in Lusaka can just be called ‘Heroes Stadium’, because ‘Heroes’ means the class of ‘93, 1974, ‘94 and more importantly the 2012 Africa Cup winners,” Kalusha tweeted.
Kalusha was captain of the fallen heroes and led the 1994 reconstructed team to the final of the Africa Cup in Tunisia where Zambia lost 1-2 to Nigeria.
Kalusha is the only Zambian to have been crowned African-footballer-of-the-year in 1988.
Martin Mutale, the younger brother of striker Kelvin Mutale, one of the players who died in the 1993 Gabon air crash, said Government’s gesture shows the appreciation for the fallen heroes.
Mutale said the facility should be called ‘Heroes National Stadium’ to include the unsung heroes who died before 1993.
“The move to name the Lusaka stadium after the 1993 team is welcome but the name should be shortened to Heroes National Stadium.
I suggest that Government should take a step further by naming the decks in the stadium after individual players and officials who died in the Gabon air crash. If possible, let them also put portraits of players and officials in and outside the stadium,” he said.
Chipolopolo Soccer Fans Association chairman Yotam Mwanza also urged Government to consider removing the word ‘Disaster’ from the name of the stadium.
Mwanza said fans are happy that Government has named the stadium in line with what they submitted to the Ministry of Sport and Youth.
He said fans suggested that the stadium be called ‘The 1993 National Stadium’
And Zambia Sports Fans Association chairman Peter Makembo said the name is too long for a stadium.
Makembo said it was not too late for Government to change the name to something more simplified.

Heroes Stadium is good enough. It is all encompassing. That long will be shortened by people and it will just be called ‘Gabon’! And who wants such a name? Or worse still ‘Disaster’! Imagine a newspaper report…..’Zambia massacred at Disaster stadium!’ AWE!

Heroes Stadium is enough. We do not need to idolize the great players who died. We should not debate this issue too much. Let their souls rest in Peace. If we call the Stadium Heroes Stadium we can connect the dead of 1993 with the winners of 2012. It is also a positive name.

All above are right that proposed name is a mouth full, it is a phrase and not a name.
PF government, show that you listen to Zambians and name the stadium HEROES NATIONAL STADIUM or simply HEROES STADIUM as proposed by Kalu.
That Gabon Disaster fimofimo is utter nonsense! Ala imwe ba cabinet, have some imagination.

“PF Govt cimo na Gabon Stadium” would be a good name. Hehehehe I would love to remember our heroes in soccer both the ones gone before us and those still with us and those to come. Also I would like to market our local term for Soccer “BOLA” so I suggest Bola Stadium. Our Soccer team is also known as Chipolopolo how about Chipolopolo Bola Stadium?

Lets just think of a better name which should have the following considerations;
-short name
-meaninful
-independent of any other country
-should not make our souls to cry or remember that fateful day
-inspiring
-not affliated to politics especially in relation to the ruling gvt.

Kālu is right with his analysis. Zambia has produced a number of both living and fallen hero’s in football and not forgetting Kālu himself. This is simple logic and not too much to ask Mr. leopard or sorry Mr. kambwili the Sport Minister to ask cabinet to remove “Gabon disaster” from the suggested name newly constructed Lusaka stadium name so it remains “Hero National stadium. “period. After all cabinet is made up of people and listening leaders of higher standing in our nation who make correct decisions on national issues.

Please consult intellectuals and technocrats. Tell them we want a name that should bring out the memories of our fallen heroes in Gabon. Very easy. The name will be their devoid of such confusions and lack of analytical thought pattern. When you consult politicians, its ‘hear..hear kind of thing as most of them are too well fed to think and crack out such staff.
Certainly the name Gabon Disaster shinga shinga uko is too crude for smart Zambians.
