Danny Drops ‘Mary Mafiga’

DANNY Kaya, who has re-christened himself as Professor Danny, is set to release a new album any time soon, but for now, he has released a single titled Mary Mafiga.
The song is a social commentary about one’s struggle to overcome their weakness.
Danny may like to be called Prof. Danny, but with that song title, he may find himself called Danny Mary Mafiga.
When he released his debut album, he found himself being called Danny Masiku Onse, which was the title of the song that catapulted him to fame. Although his follow-up album Ama Lovingi did not stick to him, his third Yakumbuyo did so.
And since then, he has found himself bearing monikers of his albums such as Kaya, Champion and Live. However, of all the names, it is Danny Kaya which has stuck.
Anyhow, Danny will be hoping that Mary Mafiga performs far much better than his last effort V.o.V (Voice of the Voiceless) which, though, a good album, was derailed during promotion as he had to sort out a few contractual issues with P.K. Chishala’s family on the Weekend.
Otherwise, that same song Weekend, Love and Age, 90 Minutes and the hugely popular Ku na Kwa, did exceptionally well. The last song talks about the unfairness of the living standards in shanty compounds popularly known as Kwa and high residential areas known as Ku.
You should watch his dancers hop to this song!
Danny has hinted that he could be taking a break after releasing his tenth studio album, and with Mary Mafiga being his ninth effort, it means he is nearing to closing curtains on the one of the most glittering careers on the local front.
He must be satisfied with the way things have gone in his career!
Danny debuted with Mvelani, which produced Masiku Onse, featuring JK and Big Up, a tribute to the young musicians who were setting the pace. He followed it up with Ama Lovingi, which had hits like Takwakabe, Chikondi Chako Julie and My Jane featuring JK again.
His third album is the critically-acclaimed Yakumbuyo, considered to be one of the most comprehensive efforts on the local front. It had songs like Njelela, Pantu Mukoncluda, Uzani Kumbukila, Tau Fipanga, Joni and I Can’t Believe.
After that, follows Kaya, whose title-track topped local radio charts for months. This album had tracks like Beta TV, Bushe, Bakakwafwa, Chinibaba, Wamona Nomba, Niulule, Vilibe Nchito, Kukondema Kondema, Ba Boss and Vabakulu Nivabakulu.
After Kaya, Danny released Champion which birthed the title-track, As Long As, Protecting What Is Mine, Naiwe, I’ve A Feeling, Ka Last, Bambikile Umuti, Ninshi Nicha and Maybe Its 4 The Beta.
The other album 10 Years was meant to celebrate the decade that he had clocked as a musician. But the Live album, another hugely successful had the title-track, the intro 2010, We’ll Miss You, a song that celebrates the life of a departed friend with whom he went to all sorts of sordid places, Zimene Wachita, Si Vinthu, Tawaiso Mboneko, First Luv, Chikalabafye Ififine.
