Price of Mealie-Meal Hiked

THE retail price of mealie-meal has been increased by about K5 after millers hiked the cost of the staple food by K2 on account of the removal of fuel and maize subsidies.
Prices for a 25kilogram bag have gone up by K2 and up to K6 for wholesale and retail respectively effective July 8, a survey has revealed.
Millers Association of Zambia president Allan Sakala said the increase has been necessitated by the removal of subsidies on fuel and maize.
But the Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has urged milling companies not to use the removal of subsidies to exploit consumers.
Mr Sakala who could not disclose by how much millers have increased the mealie-meal, however, indicated that, “Some milling companies have increased the price due to individual costs that firms incur during production. Their [millers’] duty is to make available the product at an affordable price.”
A survey conducted by the Daily Mail in Lusaka yesterday revealed that most retail outlets are selling the commodity between K58 and K63 for breakfast and between K40 and K42 for roller meal.
Wholesale price for Pembe, Simba and Milile brands have been increased to K58 from K56 while National Milling’s Mother’s Pride is now fetching K54 from K52.
For roller meal, Mother’s Pride is at K40 from K38 while Milile is now K42 from K40.
Some retail shops in Kamwala and Kabwata are selling a 25kg bag of Pembe and Simba breakfast mealie-meal at K62 and K63, while at Levy Business Park’s Pick N Pay, Simba K60.
Meanwhile, ZACA executive director Muyunda Ililonga urged milling firms to exercise morals as they run their businesses and refrain from the culture of reaping from consumers’ little resources.
In a telephone interview yesterday, Mr Ililonga said, “Business houses should learn how to run their business in the long term and not just looking at gaining profits and forgetting that every business needs to stabilise and create customer loyalty.
ZACA is appealing to business houses not to take advantage of the removal of subsidies on fuel and maize to exploit consumers by increasing mealie meal prices.”

I would like to make a public apology for contributing to the victory of these baggers in 2011. I should have listened to my fellow Zambians who were saying its going to be a big mistake to vote for this guy he’s a liar. It was true and in i regret big time. Everything was a lie; among their manifesto these lies were told and the exact opposite of what was said is what is happening, check:
    1. reduce the size of cabinet
    2. dissolve ERB
    chase away chinese
    3. price of fuel will be reduced
    4. the dollar has gone up than in any other govenment
    5. cleaner city (look at town its a sorry site)

And the list is endless… shame

The millers are playing games here. I think there is need for auditing these companies to establish how much they make per 50kg bag of maize once milled. I feel pity on them most especially with an announcement by Government that FRA will be setting up milling plants across the Country to curb the exploitation by the current millers , what it therefore means is that the current Millers will lose business. If we remember , there was a similar cry in 2000/2001 when FTJ contracted Chani Fisheries to be supplying and selling cheap meali meal to the citizens ,and the result was most milling plants which were expoiliting people went under. The choice to do good lies with the Millers , even though they complain of high fuel prices , but surely they can do better.

Do you remember the days of UBZ, LIMA bank? And do you remember why there was shortage of Millie Meal in 1990? If you do, you will remember that private companies solved these situations.

These millers are just exploiting us by using the removal of subsidies as an excuse, also these idiots that we have in power want to work like dictators by not consulting.I personally think zambia does not have an eligible selfless democratic party capable of taking this country to the next level, all I see is greedy politicians trying to by all means to be in power for their personal selfish gain.it’s not easy to be a president in a third world nation we have a very long way to go.

The only way to ‘beat’ hunger is to work hard in your ‘farm’ or kumabala so that you have maize for nshima because with or without subsidies the price of ubunga will not remain stagnant. For sure me I eat ‘gaisha’ with or without PF.

ZWD has been disabled so that few voices can criticize. If they say only the rich were benefiting why not put up a system in such a way that the poor benefit and the rich too because they are also citizens.
