Govt Planning to Build New Airport In Kitwe

PF Kwacha member of parliament Bonnie Mutale says the government plans to construct a new airport for the city of Kitwe once the Mufuchani Bridge is completed.
Addressing the media after touring the houses being constructed for the people to be relocated from where the actual bridge was being constructed, Mutale said the K60 million Mufuchani Bridge was a major milestone.
Mutale said the actual construction of Mufuchani Bridge in Kitwe would start after the construction of houses for over 37 settlers who will be displaced.
He said the people, especially those living across the Kafue River, had been crying for the bridge since 1978.
Meanwhile, Mutale said the government, through Nkana Water and Sewerage Company, was working hard to improve the water reticulation system as evidenced by the major works being done on the water treatment plant in Nkana East.
He said the new plant being constructed under the Kitwe-Kalulushi water and sanitation project would boost the water pressure levels and enhance the capacity of Nkana Water and Sewerage in delivering the much-needed services to the growing population.
And Ngobola Muyembe, a design engineer from Gulf Engineering, appealed to civic leaders in Kitwe to stop allocating plots on water and sewer service lines if the project was to be successful.
“Yes, the water pressure will be boosted and it will be enough for Kitwe but the other challenge will be on the distribution side. Councillors and all civic leaders must discourage illegal land allocation because some houses are built on top of the service lines, and that’s where the problem is,” said Muyembe.

Its reasonable to build it in Mongu because of tourist attraction during Kuomboka. Kitwe is near Ndola where there is already SM Kapwepwe Int’l Airport.

Time will come for Mongu to have the airport not now.
i fully agree with you when it comes to kitwe no need for one as it is so close to Ndola coz in other countries that is just one town.

Did you say building an airport for Kuomboka, an event that happens once every year (and some times once in 2 years)? Or is it a case of having something to say regardless of topic and logic? Just asking!!!

We used to have a small airport at Ndeke then it was moved to South Downs Airport. Having one back in Kitwe is great. We need a new stadium too.

I WOULD RATHER GOVT TAKES DEVELOPMENT TO NUMEROUS DISTRICTS AND NOT PUTTING EVERYTHING IN LUSAKA.
MOST PEOPLE TRAVEL FROM ALL CORNERS OF THIS COUNTRY TO DO SHOPPING,SCHOOLING,HOSPITAL,EMPLOYMENT,BUSINESS,ENTERTAINMENT ETC IN LUSAKA. TAKE ALL THOSE FACILITIES NEARER TO PEOPLE AND YOU WILL DE-CONGEST LUSAKA.
BUILDING AIRPORTS WILL SERVE MORE ON TRAVELING TO LUSAKA THAN ANYTHING ELSE.
IF NEED BE,JUST UPGRADE THE AIRPORTS IN NDOLA AND LIVINGSTONE AND PUT UP BIG RELIABLE AIRSTRIPS IN MONGU,CHIPATA AND ONE IN NORTHERN SIDE OF ZAMBIA.

Now now what is this? Didn’t the same PF say they are relocating Ndola International to the site near where daghammerskaeld died because the current airport was too construed for expansion? There really is no need for another airport on the copperbelt. Upgrading Ndola is enough. Let these mines also upgrade the dialpidated airstrips dotted around the country for smaller aircraft. After all, they have planes.

Constructing a new road from South Downs to Kt-Nd dual carriage way would be quicker, cheaper @ make the aerodrom more accessible than where we have to drive thru Kalulushi

why not start with cheaper projects like improving the road network (if at all there is one) before embarking on projects that will take us to campaign times? once, my friend told me that if you see a person driving straight in Chingola then that person is drunk and not seeing all thepot-holes (imikonko) around.

we appretiate government’s efforts to bring development. but it would be more reasonable for govt to concentrate on the road network coz from what i see the chingola kitwe road is an international route and besides not everyone is going to afford the flights. please govt. be realistic. address the real issues.

That is good but the government should also prioritize projects aimed at poverty alleviation at micro level than always at macro levels.

the government is planning to carry out too many projects at the same time….roads, rural electrification, airports, building of 40 courts across the country, new government offices in the new districts and provinces..the only thing that they will succeed at is more BY-ELECTIONS!!! thats were all the money is going

Better the government to use the money to expand the SM Int’ airport than biuld another in kitwe. SM Int’ airport compared to ORT in SA, you will agree with me that our SM Int’ airport is more less like a toy airport.

My argument is that an international airport should I be located in Kitwe rather than Ndola.

The fact is that Kitwe is more centrally located on the Copperbelt than Ndola.

In fact, almost all the towns on the Copperbelt are equidistant to Kitwe.

In terms of actual distance, the average distance to Kitwe from any part of the Copperbelt is 40 kilometers.

In contrast, the average distance to Ndola from any part of the Copperbelt is 69 kilometers.

It therefore makes more economic sense and it is fairer and cheaper to most people on the Copperbelt to travel to Kitwe than Ndola to board a plane.

For many, this would cut their transportation and other costs significantly.

This cannot be the case if they have travel all the way from, say, Chingola or Chililabombwe to Ndola.

This should ideally give Kitwe the privilege of hosting an international airport to fairly serve the people of the Copperbelt.

For these reasons, I can foresee the projected airport in Kitwe recording more traffic than the Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Airport in Ndola because of Kitwe’s advantage of centrality.

If I stay in Chingola why should I travel all the way to Ndola when I can board a plane in nearby Kitwe?

Driving from Lusaka to Kitwe could be a Nightmare. I’d go by plane. I say build it. This will reduce joblessness as there will be more taxis to take people around. More food on Sulu’s tables
