0ATUU: Zambia’s Minimum Wage too Low

Organization of African Trade Union Unity (0ATUU) president Ibrahim Ghandour has noted that Zambia’s minimum wage is too low.

Speaking during the official opening of Zambia Congress of Trade Unions pre 2014 national budget workshop in Lusaka today, Professor Ghandour has also noted that Civil servants in Zambia get very low salaries to be paying tax.

Professor Ghandour explains that the Sudanese government has managed to stop taxing all Civil servants owing to the fact that their wages are too low.

Professor Ghandour who is also a Member of the Sudanese parliament adds that civil servants in most African countries and other workers who earn low wages cannot avoid to meet their daily needs because of the high cost of living.

He has since called on the Zambian government to consider taxing all private companies if they are to continue taxing civil servants.

Speaking earlier, Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Leonard Hikaumba says there is need for government to give a listening ear to the many challenges being faced by the labour movement.

Mr.Hikaumba adds that the labour movement will always work to the expectations of the people without any delay.

Meanwhile, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Resident Director Helmut Elisher has urged the labour movement to explore the content of the 2013 national budget and analyze the impact it will have on the economy.

Sounds good but like Bijoli has said, there is nothing for free. This is not to dispute the fact that salaries are too low for civil servants no wonder its hard to close the TUPUNDA around where little milk and butter drip.I salute all that live without making use of any loopholes God will surely reward them.

It seems most people and Government are only concerned about the Civil Servants. What happens to people who work in private companies. People have got the wrong conception that most get a lot of money. You should do a survey. No medical, no housing allowance, no pension. We are also suffering. No unions or if you ask for increments they tell you to find a job somewhere else.

Civil service and servants are too corrupt and inefficient to EARN improved wages. Every year your PS’s appear before Public Accounts Committee to answer audit querries. On Monday your Lsk provincial PS and his stammering accountant ( what are their names?) were so embarrassing to litsen to before PAC. It actually appears you get too much. However I can name departments which perform..the rest you are overpaid…
