Copperbelt University Vice Chancellor Naison Ngoma has disclosed that property worth over K112, 000 was destroyed during the students’ riots that rocked the institution last week.
The riots were as a result of Professor Ngoma’s directive to throw out squatters in the rooms.
Addressing journalists at a press briefing at the Copperbelt University Thursday, Professor Ngoma said management has resolved to penalize the Copperbelt University Students Union (COBUSU) for the damages incurred during the riots.
He says the university does not want to punish all the students because the majority of them are innocent and it would be unfair to ask students to contribute money towards the renovation of the damaged property when it was union leaders who failed to show leadership and properly guide the students.
And Professor Ngoma has with immediate effect lifted the suspensions placed on students who allegedly incited other students to bring about confusion at the campus.
He says the lifting of suspensions comes as a result of some students and parents to some students who sought for forgiveness over the confusion.
Professor Ngoma adds that the suspended students went further to write exculpatory letters.
He stresses however that though the suspensions have been lifted, the students will have to face the consequences of their actions by paying for the damaged property.
Meanwhile, Professor Ngoma says the institution will only be re-opened after the senate sits on Monday next week.
He however says the university management is working towards renovating the damaged infrastructure so that students can return to an organized and conducive learning environment.
The Professor has further disclosed that he has received various offers from well wishers who would like to partner with the university to construct hostels at the institution.
On Wednesday, students held a meeting to discuss possible solutions to challenges being faced at the university which they forwarded to management.
Issues suggested to management include the need to allowing squatting of 4 students per room, renovation of university infrastructure and lifting the suspension of students among others.
Professor Ngoma has however maintained his stance on squatting describing it as a tragedy.
He says the university has accepted all the proposals made before it except for squatting.

Yes, let HH build new hostels or even buy bunkers for them to stop squatting. Bunk beds will house more than two persons per room.

I wonder if these students consider sanitary issues for them to suggest four people sharing one tiny room. It is only in Zambia where one can even volunteer for such abuse instead of pressing management for more infrastructure,full-stop.

@XXX and ayoba – The stupidt is not to know what is going on in other peoples houses, in bemba there a saying that says (ING’ANDA YAMUNOBE BAIKUMBWA UMUTENDE) CBU as at now maybe you fools did not know is being ruled by soldiers, it is no longer a school, it is a barrack, nayo ya ba RED PRT. come and see what is happening, the personnel offices changes hands from time to time, thus the mismanagement of employees records, the UNION ALSO SEEM TO HAVE NO POWER AT ALL, OF MAYBE THEY ARE BEING BRIBED. iT IS ****** TO THINK ALL THE STUDENTS THINK THE SAME, IF U WANT TO COME AND FIND OUT THE TRTH COME AND WORK HERE. When the students are lectured, they are even told how to go about things in school, they are told this is their premises, and they should guard it peacefully, if you were a student before, now it is another case, if someone can insult in public what more in privacy, the president has kept quite
over this. We urge the government to stop recruiting the soldiers to mann civilians, this is a mess, lectures are not respected yet theyare ones who lecture and bring cash to these soldiers who insult them. problem is these soldier wants to treat the school like military camp. SO SHUT-UP FOOL

I am a student at this institution. As a matter of fact, male students share a single bed. What happens sometimes between them is obvious. Some of them are even practising homosexuality because of sharing beds. Discourage squatting please and introduce bunker beds so that each room can have two bunkers for 4 students than sharing one single bed.

Get real iwe kolwe, does it mean if you sleep with a fellow man on the same bed then you are going to have sex? We chipuba iwe, I have slept with my friends so many times without even having sexual feelings. You are not a human being, but a sub-human. You are not even a diva, you just a lesbian who thinks everyone else is gay.

@Umupandapwiti,you must be gay yourself, or are you a monk; why over react? CBU Diva is talking about real men. Most guys are drunkards who get high on chibuku easily. Once they get high, they cannot can stop their sexual feelings and when they squatter with fellow guys, they start having feelings and what do you expect after that? So I encourage that they introduce bunker beds because building hostels would take years and years.

@Ka Gelo, I am absolutely not gay. However, I think you have a good point on introduction of bunkers.
