POLICE in Mongu have charged 54 people accused of pushing for the secession of Western province from Zambia with treason.
The ‘dissidents’ were initially charged with seditious practices and possession of seditious materials, which has been substituted with treason.
Western province commissioner of police Lombe Kamukoshi, who confirmed this in an interview from Mongu yesterday said the police consulted the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the matter.
The number of suspects has risen from 47 to 54 following the arrest of seven more suspects in Kalabo and Sesheke on Thursday and Friday last week.
Two weeks ago, the suspects staged a protest after police thwarted their move to hoist a flag. They swore in the “administrator-general” Afumba Mombotwa who is still on the run.
“We have charged all the suspects with treason after we consulted the DPP. We have revised the charge,” she said.
Ms Kamukoshi said police received fresh instructions from the DPP to charge the suspects with treason.
She said all the suspects will appear in court on September 3, 2013.
On the seven suspects who were arrested between Thursday and Friday, Ms Kamukoshi said four were arrested in Sesheke and three in Kalabo.
Among those arrested is publicity secretary of the Linyungandambo association in Sesheke Alick Mahongo, 36.
Others who were arrested in Sesheke are Oliver Songa, 34, Chunga Suba, 21, and Enock Sindoyi, 23.
From Kalabo, Nosiku Liamba, 33, an employee of African Parks, Cliff Mumbula Mutukwa, 41 and Simasiku Walubita, 50 were arrested.
She said Mahongo, who was hiding at the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church camp meeting in Sesheke, was found with seditious material.
“We picked him [Kaliki Mahongo] from the SDA camp with seditious material and an identity card for the Linyungandambo group,” she said.
Ms Kamukoshi said Liamba had been on the police wanted list for a long time on offences related to the activities of the Linyungandambo.
Recently, Western province permanent Secretary Emmanuel Mwamba warned that government was monitoring the “big fish” connected to Barotseland who are operating websites and generating seditious materials and that the net will soon close in on them.

mmm….this is a very complex and sensitive issue with serious repercursions on the peace being enjoyed in the country if not carefully handled. Cagening or executing those 57 is not really a solution…those are nt the only people bearing such feelings, the root cause must be addressed.Sata claimed he had a solution for this problem, why has he suddenly bcome quiet over this issue? What plans did he have cause i thnk they are needed nw.

Mpangula Mputyu aka TeamDoraPetauke2013, H.E. SATA WAS CAMPAIGNING IN HIS INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY. WHEN HE MADE THOSE PROMISES, HE NEVER CONSULTED ZAMBIANS AND FOR US ORDINARY ZAMBIANS IT IS NULL AND VOID AT LAW.
HE DID NOT MAKE THOSE PROMISES AS PRESIDENT OF ZAMBIA.
WARNING TO OUR WESTERN FRIENDS. ZAMBIA IS A UNITARY STATE. ANY SUCH BAROTSE NOSENSE IS TREASONABLE FOR THE WHOLE COUNTRY. THE BAROTSE ISSUE IS DEAD. PERIOD.

Remember that the Preamble of the Zambian Constitution only included the ‘unitary state’ phrase in the 1996 [Amendment] Act? Have you ever wondered why this is the case? The coat of arms for Zambia is worded ‘One zambia One Nation’. Please note that it does not read ‘One Zambia One State! Know the difference between a state and a nation?
Do you know for a fact that Barotseland was a nation-state before entering into Agreement for one nationhood with Nortern Rhodesia?
What have you got to say to all this?

Sindy, which freedom, freedom born out of confusion is not freedom at all.
The Lozis cannot exist on their own in western province. Even if we allowed them to be independent immediately, how would they earn their income as a country? They will just be a thorn in our back side.
Better to have them as a thorn in our palm, we can easily pull the thorn out, than in our arse.
These people are being used by some enemies of the state and they will pay with their lives. It is foolish to have someone fund you to carry out a crime, unless the financier is ready to be named if things fall apart.
