Wife Told Me To Steal, Man Tells Lusaka Court

By CAROLINE KALOMBE
A 28-YEAR-OLD farm caretaker has told a magistrate’s court that his wife advised him to steal from his employer because he owed him benefits the couple did not have bedding.
This is in a matter in which Friday Mwanamwalye is charged with breaking and entry, contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
When the matter came up for plea before principal resident magistrate Aridah Chulu, Mwanamwalye said he understood the charged and that he committed the crime.
He said he had problems at home as he had no means of taking care of his family and that stealing was the only way out.
Mwanamwalye said he was a caretaker of a farm and that when he was fired his wife told him to steal from his boss because he had not given him benefits for the time he had worked for him.
He told the court that the couple did not have bedding and that he decided to steal the items from his boss’ house.
“It was the problems that I was facing that led me to stealing. My wife forced me to get the items because I was not given benefits by my boss when I was relieved of my employment,” Mwanamwalye said.
He told the court that he stole a mattress, a stereo set and two bedspreads.
Particulars of the offence are that Mwanawalye, on dates unknown but in August, did steal a mattress, stereo, bedspread, television set and some kitchen utensils.
Magistrate Chulu entered a plea of not guilty and set September 11 as the date for the commencement of trial.
