SATA’s UNWTO Closing Ceremony Speech

Sata

Sata

Below is His Excellency, Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata’s UNWTO Closing Ceremony speech.

SALUTATIONS!

LET ME BEGIN BY CONGRATULATING YOUR EXCELLENCY DR. RIFAI, ON YOUR RE-ELECTION AS SECRETARY GENERAL OF OUR WORLD BODY ON TOURISM. THIS CONFIRMS THAT AS MEMBER STATES, WE HAVE CONFIDENCE AND TRUST IN YOUR EXCEPTIONAL ABILITIES TO STEER THIS BODY TO GREATER HEIGHTS.

AS WE COME TO THE END OF THIS GATHERING, I WISH TO EXPRESS MY PROFOUND GRATITUDE TO ALL THE DELEGATES FOR YOUR HARD WORK, COMMITMENT AND SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION OF THE BUSINESS OF THE 20TH SESSION OF THE UNWTO GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2013, CO-HOSTED BY ZAMBIA AND ZIMBABWE.

THE HOSTING OF THIS EVENT IS HISTORICAL FOR US AND WILL FOREVER REMAIN A TREASURED EXPERIENCE. WE HOPE YOU EXPERIENCED AND ENJOYED THE VIBRANT AND ADMIRABLE SPIRIT OF BROTHERHOOD THAT EXISTS BETWEEN OUR TWO COUNTRIES. OUR STRONG BOND IS ANCHORED ON OUR COMMON TRADITIONS AND CULTURAL VALUES THAT TRANSCENDS PHYSICAL BOUNDERIES.

YOUR EXCELLENCIES, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,

THE OUTCOME OF THE 20TH SESSION OF THE UNWTO GENERAL ASSEMBLY HAS OPENED UP NEW AND ENORMOUS POSSIBILITIES FOR MEMBER STATES TO MAKE TOURISM CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR ECONOMIES AND IN THE PROCESS, IMPROVE THE LIVELIHOODS OF COMMUNITIES AND INDIVIDUALS.

IAM ALSO HAPPY TO NOTE THAT, DURING THIS GENERAL ASSEMBLY, THE PROGRAMME OF WORK OF THE UNWTO, HAS BEEN ADOPTED UP TO 2015.

IN THIS REGARD, ZAMBIA WILL UNDERTAKE FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES, IN ORDER TO BENEFIT FROM THE DECISIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF THIS ASSEMBLY.

DISTINGUISHED DELEGATES, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,

I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING WITH KEEN INTEREST THE DELIBERATIONS OF THIS GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON EFFORTS TO ADVANCE TOURISM’S SUSTAINABLE GROWTH SUCH AS VISA FACILITATION, CONNECTIVITY AND ACCESSIBILITY. I AM PROUD TO STATE THAT MY GOVERNMENT IS FOCUSED ON IMPROVING THE TOURISM SECTOR’S COMPETITIVENESS BY STREAMLINING THE REGULATORY ENVIRONMENT AS WELL AS PUTTING IN PLACE TAX INCENTIVES AIMED AT PROMOTING GROWTH AND INVESTMENT.

IN ADDITION, MY GOVERNMENT IS INVESTING IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF ROADS, RAIL, AIRPORTS, BORDER FACILITIES AND INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY INFRASTRUCTURE WHICH WILL FACILITATE OPENING UP OF MORE TOURIST SITES IN THE COUNTRY.

YOUR EXCELLENCY, THE SECRETARY GENERAL,

IN LINE WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF INCREASING INTERNATIONAL TOURIST ARRIVALS AROUND THE WORLD, I AM PLEASED TO NOTE THAT, THE UNWTO REPORTED THAT IN THE LAST DECADE, INTERNATIONAL TOURISM DEVELOPMENT HAS SEEN THE GROWTH OF MANY TOURIST DESTINATIONS TO DEVELOPING ECONOMIES SUCH AS OURS.

AS A GROWING ECONOMY, ZAMBIA WELCOMES THIS DEVELOPMENT.
IT IS MY CONVICTION THAT WITH APPROPRIATE INTERVENTIONS AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT FROM THE UNWTO SECRETARIAT, DEVELOPING DESTINATIONS SUCH AS OURS CAN BECOME ATTRACTIONS TO INTERNATIONAL TOURISTS.

DISTINGUISHED DELEGATES, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,

I WOULD LIKE TO APPEAL THAT, AS WE PROMOTE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT TO GENERATE EMPLOYMENT AND INCOMES, LET US ALSO GUARD AGAINST THE PITFALLS OF OVER-CONSUMPTION. WE NEED TO KEEP IN MIND THAT WE HAVE A SACRED DUTY TO PROTECT OUR PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT AND CULTURES BY PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE TOURISM.

WE OWE IT TO OURSELVES, OUR PLANET AND FUTURE GENERATIONS, TO PROMOTE THE BALANCE OF NATURE AND CULTURAL BIODIVERSITY.

FURTHER, I WISH TO REMIND THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, THAT INCREASED INTERACTIONS AMONG TOURISTS AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES HAVE THE POTENTIAL AND CAPACITY TO PROMOTE INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING AND CONSEQUENTLY, GLOBAL PEACE.

YOUR EXCELLENCY, THE SECRETARY GENERAL,

ALLOW ME TO COMMEND YOU AND YOUR STAFF FOR PROMOTING THE SUSTAINABLE TOURISM ELIMINATING POVERTY (ST-EP) INITIATIVE, WHICH I BELIEVE IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE ATTAINMENT OF THE UNITED NATIONS MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS.

I AM DELIGHTED TO NOTE THAT THIS INITIATIVE HAS BEEN REVISITED SO THAT IT CAN BE A STAND ALONE INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION TO HARNESS THE DEVELOPMENTAL POTENTIAL OF TOURISM IN THE FIGHT AGAINST POVERTY.

IN THIS WAY, IT ALSO HAS A SPECIAL FOCUS ON MEETING THE SURVIVAL NEEDS OF OUR PEOPLE LIVING ON LESS THAN A DOLLAR A DAY.

DISTINGUISHED DELEGATES,

IN CONCLUSION, I WISH TO COMMEND THE MINISTERS AND OFFICIALS FROM THE TWO MINISTRIES RESPONSIBLE FOR TOURISM IN ZAMBIA AND ZIMBABWE FOR A JOB VERY WELL DONE DURING THE PREPARATION AND SUCCESSFUL HOSTING OF THIS GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

I ONCE AGAIN THANK THE UNWTO SECRETARIAT LED BY THE DISTINGUISHED AND ABLE SECRETARY GENERAL, FOR THE SUPPORT RENDERED TO OUR TEAMS TO ENSURE SUCCESSFUL HOSTING OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

THE PRESENCE OF DELEGATIONS AND THEIR ACTIVE PARTICIPATION CONTRIBUTED TO THIS SUCCESS.
I URGE YOU THAT UPON RETURN TO YOUR RESPECTIVE COUNTRIES TO ENSURE THAT FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES ARE UNDERTAKEN IN A TIMELY MANNER.

DISTINGUISHED DELEGATES,

AS YOU ALL RETURN HOME, WE WISH YOU SAFE TRAVEL AND WE HOPE YOU HAD A MEMORABLE STAY WITH US. NOW THAT YOU HAVE BRIEFLY SEEN NATURE IN ITS UNIQUE AFRICAN SETTING, IT IS OUR HOPE THAT YOU WILL SPEND A LITTLE MORE DAYS OR RETURN TO FURTHER SAMPLE THE TOURISM ATTRACTIONS OF OUR TWO SISTERLY REPUBLICS WHOM WE FONDLY REFER TO AS SIAMESE TWINS.

WE BELIEVE YOU ARE ALSO OUR GOODWILL AMBASSADORS WHO, WE ARE SURE, WILL MARKET OUR HERITAGE SITE, THE MIGHTY VICTORIA FALLS.

BEHIND THE SCENES, HOTEL MANAGERS, TOUR OPERATORS, THE MEDIA, TRANSLATORS, INTERPRETERS, TRADITIONAL LEADERS, TRADITIONAL DANCERS, CIVIC LEADERS, TRANSPORT OPERATORS AND NUMEROUS OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS ALL PLAYED CRITICAL ROLES.

TO YOU ALL, I SAY THANK YOU VERY MUCH. YOU HAVE DISTINCTIVELY BEAMED ZAMBIA AND ZIMBABWE TO THE WORLD OF TOURISM AND THIS IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. INDEED, WE SHALL FOREVER REMEMBER AND TREASURE THIS EXPERIENCE.

LET US CONTINUE CELEBRATING THE SUCCESS OF THIS GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND WITH THESE WORDS, I, IN THE PRESENCE OF MY DEAR BROTHER AND COLLEAGUE COMRADE MUGABE DECLARE THAT THE 20TH SESSION OF THE UNWTO IS NOW OFFICIALLY CLOSED.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL
I THANK YOU.

Mmembe’s POST & Wynter Kabimba’s Camp accuses GBM for wanting to beat up a PF Official Kamba.

DEFENCE minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba on Monday threw a punch at PF Lusaka Province youth chairman Kennedy Kamba for allegedly organising party cadres to denounce him at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone.

Masumba who claimed to have seen it all said it was unfortunate that a minister attempted to beat a junior official in public.
“Among a few things I saw, because I was standing close, was the Minister of Defence become emotional and I kept asking myself questions whether he was joking or he was serious; I didn’t understand what he intended to do on Kamba. He told him that ‘Nalakuponona (I will beat you)’; then Hon Yamfwa Mukanga stopped him

Guys, the word UKUPONONA does not mean beating or ukuma at all. As a matter of fact, it is one of those terrible bemba insults. If GBM said it, he should apologise to us all because he knows how insulting it is for he is a prince in Bemba royal family, and grew up in Kasama I will not tell you it’s practical meaning, but do ask any old bemba man or woman, and let kaponyas know about it too.

Infact if you’re not careful, you can go faster than the one you’re calling as ailing because its like you’re mocking the giver of life. When did you start calling president Sata SICK way back in 2006 but he is not dying and some of your colleagues who were calling him sick are long gone. Did you see him yester evening, does ailing person look like the way he was? You’re sick your self for failing to know those who are regarded as such. You rether go and hung with flapant hatred.

Isaac you must be a product of a broken home because you look like you are seeking for too much attention and your misaligned senses can not notice a budget overrun, a dying economy, high rates of unemployment and worst still your president is working on Levys vision 2030. MCS is a failure and the sooner you accept that the better

Because you’re a total failure yourself, therefore you cannot see anything in a positive way. My friend am not from a broken home as you suggest you sloven using your rotten and stagnant little brain neither was i referred to as stepson at any time in my life. Lack of proper political judgement is the additional reason why your Hakainde will never see those corridors of state house. If your party UPND will form govt in 2031, the one leading your party to that victory will not be Hakande mark my words.

To correct you am not a UPND affiliate. I am here as a Zambian with an open mind. Soon i will have an affiliation with the right party which might even be your PF and you will begin to read about me and you will begin to make posts about me.
They are people in this forum who are peoples step sons and i think it would have been decent if you resisted your ego from making that statement… am sure soon you will have a step son if you continue with the current mindset you have.
PF has positives but unfortunately their positives do not outweigh their negatives and what are we as patriotic Zambians suppose to do? Unlike you many of us are not blind followers. You might not come from a broken home but looks like you had a tough time growing up.

Papa Josh is a disgruntled and melodramatic young man. Your abnegation of facts while they are tangible is a serious psychological problem. The so called educated are too removed from the masses such that even when they walk among our people, they stick out like an alien among humans.
The basics that PF is addressing is too simple for this lot to appreciate, they are stuck-up and see things from different lenses. The basics that Zambia needs to start addressing poverty reduction and unemployment are falling into place under the PF government.
HEMCS should ignore this lot and just carry on, even yesterday as I left Kitwe I noticed that the dual carriage way towards Mulenga on the left and Wusakile on the other side will soon have street lights and may actually reduce the rampant RTAs of vehicles knocking down pedestrians on this stretch.
The Chinese used to pay people slavery wages, but today, they comply with the labour laws.
At RDA, Mr. Mooya has just told them off over the 20% reserved for Zambian road contractors to build capacity.
Only under PF have we got our people’s pride back. We will not sale our souls to the capitalist devils again, not just yet.
