A 32-YEAR-OLD woman of Kitwe’s Mulenga died on the spot while her nine-month-old baby is nursing serious injuries in Kitwe Central Hospital (KCH) after the two were knocked down in a hit-and-run road traffic accident on the Kitwe-Ndola dual carriageway.
Acting Copperbelt commissioner of police Joyce Kasosa confirmed in Kitwe on Tuesday that the accident happened on Monday around 16:00 hours.
Ms Kasosa said the vehicle careered off the road and knocked down three people, including the baby on the side of the road.
“I can confirm that we had a fatal accident yesterday in Kitwe. Three people were hit by a vehicle. One of the victims is reported to have died this morning,” Ms Kasosa said.
She said the police in Kitwe have launched a manhunt for the driver, who sped off after the accident.
And the dead woman’s brother-in-law Collins Mulenga, identified her as Florence Mulenga of house number MS 5755 and the baby was known as Grace.
Mr Mulenga said Grace is admitted to Kitwe Central Hospital after suffering a broken leg in the accident.
“My sister-in-law died after she was hit by a vehicle on the Kitwe-Ndola dual carriage way on Monday. Her baby, Grace, sustained an injury on her leg and she is receiving treatment at Kitwe Central Hospital,” Mr Mulenga said.
And an eye witness, Bwalya Chipasa said Mrs Mulenga was knocked down by a Toyota Noah and the driver dropped a drivers licence belonging to Mwanza Zulu of Buchi in Kitwe at the scene of the accident.
“We picked up a drivers licence belonging to a Mr Mwanza Zulu of Buchi,” Mr Chipasa said.

THIS IS TOO BAD THING TO HAPPEN TO A BABE, WHAT A WAY OF BEING LEFT BY THE MOTHER, SORRY GRACE, WE LOVE YOU. AS FOR THE MOTHER MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE, – PF SHOULD CONSIDER PUTTING ROBOTS THERE OR PEDESTRIAN CROSSING, THOSE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO VOTED FOR YOU IN POWER, BUT WHEN YOU ARE IN THE OFFICE, YOU CONCERTRATE ON TOWN CENTRES. @zacks how do you know, suppose the driver is the owner of the identitity? This is another way of catching him, God never fails my dear.

Mali traffic lights can not be put on a high way. what they need to do s construct crossover foot bridge. it will safeguard pedestrians

Mali true indeed, God never fails. The driver thought he’d escaped the crime scene but the license he needs to keep operating as driver remained behind. Justice for Grace and mother will surely come

YOU CAN NOT COVER THE STRETCH OF THE KITWE-NDOLA ROAD WITH FLYOVERS. THE ROAD HAS COMMUNITIES ALMOST ALL ALONG.
WE NEED TO UP THE GAME ON ROAD SAFETY AND SENSITIZATION FOR BOTH MOTORISTS AND PEDESTRIANS INCLUDING CYCLISTS.
FROM THE LOOK OF THINGS THE DRIVER CONTRIBUTED MUCH TO THIS ACCIDENT AND SHOULD FACE THE LAW.
MAY THE ALMIGHTY GOD HEAL AND BLESS THIS UNFORTUNATE BABY.

Please local authority construct a walk way across Ndola -Kitwe road it will be safe for pedestrians and cyclists. Why is it that in Lusaka local authorities do the right things as compared to Kitwe?
In lusaka they have constructed walk way briges.

Sad indeed but the culprit will soon be fished out since a license was picked at the scene.I amazing that barely a week passes minus such fatal happenings and i think its time the local authority realise to construct tunnel passage for pedestrians to and fro chamboli/mulenga.
