Zimbabwean Lecturer In Trouble Over Mugabe Insult

MASVINGO — A lecturer at Great Zimbabwe University has appeared in court for calling President Robert Mugabe names in a bar.

Chenjerai Pamhiri (38), of Rujeko Surburb, a Music and Musicology lecturer, was arrested on September 2 after allegedly labelling Mugabe an “impotent wife snatcher” at Chemberi Bar in Mashava.

This is not the first time that Pamhiri has been in trouble for insulting Mugabe.

In May this year, he was sentenced to three months in prison after he labelled Mugabe “a dirty, rotten old donkey”, but he appealed against both sentence and conviction.

In this case, the lecturer appeared for initial remand before magistrate Langton Ndokera on Monday facing a charge of undermining the authority of or insulting the President as defined in section 33 (2) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

Pamhiri, who is represented by Philip Shumba of Mutendi and Shumba law firm was remanded out of custody to September 20. Appearing for the state, Shamiso Masokovere told the court that at around 1230 hours, Pamhiri, who was at a beer drink, saw Antony Muvha wearing a Zanu PF T-shirt with Mugabe’s picture.

He allegedly said that he was a member of the losing MDC-T party before uttering the insults.

Pamhiri was arrested immediately after he left the bar by police details – Newsday.
