Pope Francis Assures Atheists: You Don’t Have To Believe In God To Go To Heaven

Responding to a list of questions published in the paper by Mr Scalfari, who is not a Roman Catholic, Francis wrote: “You ask me if the God of the Christians forgives those who don’t believe and who don’t seek the faith. I start by saying – and this is the fundamental thing – that God’s mercy has no limits if you go to him with a sincere and contrite heart. The issue for those who do not believe in God is to obey their conscience.
“Sin, even for those who have no faith, exists when people disobey their conscience.”
Robert Mickens, the Vatican correspondent for the Catholic journal The Tablet, said the pontiff’s comments were further evidence of his attempts to shake off the Catholic Church’s fusty image, reinforced by his extremely conservative predecessor Benedict XVI. “Francis is a still a conservative,” said Mr Mickens. “But what this is all about is him seeking to have a more meaningful dialogue with the world.”
In a welcoming response to the letter, Mr Scalfari said the Pope’s comments were “further evidence of his ability and desire to overcome barriers in dialogue with all”.
In July, Francis signalled a more progressive attitude on sexuality, asking: “If someone is gay and is looking for the Lord, who am I to judge him?”

Question to christians (actually the same can be asked to any religious person). If your religion is the “only right” religion, then how do you explain the existence of all other religions around the world? If you as christians are supposed to follow the bible and believe in god otherwise go to hell, then how is that fair to all of the other people who were born into another religion? There are many people who are born into other religions around the world and have no idea what the word “christian” or “bible” even mean! So basically they are just born to go to hell right? How is that fair? What kind of “god” would allow people to be born into the “wrong” religion without ever even having a chance to follow the “right” religion? It makes no sense to me… This is one of the reasons why I became an atheist (born in a christian family). I believe it is human nature to “create” religions in order to answer questions that we just cannot answer ourselves, and the world is big, which is why there is no one universal religion; this is proof to me that religion is just a big scam.

Being a Christian does not come by physical birth into a Christian family. It does not come by good works. It is a Spiritual birth that God alone is able to effect by His Spirit (Ezekiel 36:25-27, John 3:3-8)
It is impossible that all religions can be true. There are so many because there is one true one that others are trying to imitate. There is a counterfeit dollar or kwacha because people are trying to imitate the true currency somewhere. So there is genuine religion and it is the one revealed by Almighty GOD through His Son the LORD JESUS CHRIST. Believe in Him alone and you have eternal life and you never be the same again. Refuse to believe and you perish and you will wish one day that you had never been born. As simple as that dear friends.

It is very difficult to love fellow human beings if one follows what is written in so-called books of God. Bible and Koran are offshoot of holy books of one of the most advanced tribe of the middle-east.

Nor would Saint Mary of Agreda, Saint Theresa of Avila, Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Bernadette, Saint Faustina, St. Patrick, St. Benedict, St. Bridget, St. Gertrude, Saint Ligouri or any one of the Saint Apostles of Jesus Christ, or any one of the thousands of martyrs who welcomed death in preaching the full faith and counsel of God. Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. For a person to believe in Christ, he has first and foremost to be convicted and convinced of his sins by the holy spirit. His spiritual eyes opened, he then sees his need for the savior and shouts for help.
It is at this point that Christ condescends in grace to reach out to this seeking sinner.It is Christ who saves and not man’s conscience. Man’s conscience without Christ is dead.
Atheists say there’s no God. Their actions deny the existence of God. So their conscience cannot obey God’s law since God to them does not exist.

The title of this article is misleading. Most of the times the pope is quoted out of context. And of the very famous misquotes is that of Pope Leo XIII: “We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty” Most journalists are not theologians and so sometimes they misquote the pope. There is a story of a soldier who was an etheist in Germany during the second world war. When the German Army took some prisoners of war he was asked to execute about 50 Jews who were captured from poland. His consciense could not let him do that. God spoke to his cconcsience and instead of executing the Jews he allowed them to escape. He faced a military tribunal where he mentioned that though he was a German soldier he did not regret the action of allowing 50 innocent Jews to escape because killing them out of hatred was an intrinsic evil. He was executed by the military tribunal. Those who were allowed to escape and everyone else believed that God spoke to his conscience and he obeyed that concience and laid his life for following his conscience in doing a good and holy act. Even if he was not aware or did not believe that God spoke to his conscience, the fact still remains that God spoke to his concience and being a good man he obeyed. It is to such that Pope Francis says that “God’s mercy has no limits if you go to him with a sincere and contrite heart. The issue for those who do not believe in God is to obey their conscience.” So the title to this article is quite misleading.

@ Toka my friend, There is no Catholic teaching which teaches that Mary is our mediator. The Catholic teaching clearly states that we have only one mediator and the is Jesus Christ. Our Mother Mary and other saints are our intercessors and we always ask them to pray for us. I know in your Church (I was a Pente before I became Catholic)you have intercessory prayers. With us even the Church in heaven inercedes for us to Jesus!In case you are not aware read any history of Christianity you will find that out founder is Jesus Christ 2,000 years ago, not some Pastor Pico or Bishop Mudala founding a Church 10 years ago and he is alreaddy a dollar millionaire. Jesus promised that the gates of hell will not prevail against his church and 2,000 years on it is still strong and growing.

I think that God IS cruel and he is all the thing you said though didn’t mean, because you were trying to make a point.
First, he puts Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, tell them not to eat from the tree of knowledge while he know perfectly well that, with the help of the serpent which He sent, they’re GOING to eat from that tree, because he didn’t give them stronger will power. THEN HE PUNISHES ALL OF MANKIND for the sins of two people. That IS cruel!! CRUEL is the only thing you can call it!! It just gets “better” from there on. Let’s talk about all the pain and suffering that children suffer from diseases because God didn’t tell us about nutrition which, I know, would keep us a hell-of-a-lot healthier. He never told us not to process or fry foods which, we know, not only destroys nutrients, but even adds a very unhealthy element to the food. He sends people like Hitler, Mussolini, Pol Pot, Mao Tze Tung, Stalin, Caligula, and Nero who throws His faithful Christians to the lions. How many were there? Oh such “love” He has for his creations – NOT!!! Worst of all, we’re forced to be born ignorant so that we get screwed up by a screwed-up society. Some become criminals like Jeffry Dahmer and Charles Manson. Then, of course, there are his “chosen” people. I put the word “chosen” in quotes, because I’m not sure exactly what he chose them for. Did he choose them to be tortured by historical events such as the Spanish Inquisition, Pogroms and the Holocaust? Last, but not least. He created Satan. Yes he did. Since He’s God, he must have known that his Prince Satan was going to rebel and cause so much misery in the world. Maybe they’re one and the same. Maybe he’s bipolar. He certainly isn’t LOVE!!!

I believe all churches should be burned to the ground. Religion can be a useful means of giving meaning, understanding and peace to those people (sheep) who either cannot or will not think for themselves.
We are all capable of searching for and finding understanding, peace and meaning for ourselves.

If hell were factored out of the religious equation would faith remain? Highly doubtful.If prison were not to exist, would outlaws have a field day? Very likely. If God were to excuse sin in this one day – for just day – see how the brethren would rejoice with us at east point, towing ifibanthu with impunity. Also try to fire all the so called ‘****** Buju’ and see how chaos would reign in our communities. The fear of punishment has a big role in deterring individuals from offending/sinning. As for he who does right according to conscience, their behaviour won’t be influenced by the element of deterrence. The conscientious will remain upright whatever the case. Why not open the Heavenly gates to them then?

The Bible says in Acts 17:30-31 that in times of ignorance God overlooks but when the truth reaches you, its calls for repentance because God will judge us by the light we received. There many good people out there who may not know the truth and am sure the Lord will judge them by the natural law which is their conscience but to all of us who have received the truth our judgement will be different.
