A NDOLA woman with a distended abdomen has successfully been operated on at the University Teaching Hospital.
UTH public relations manager Mwenya Mulenga confirmed that 29-year-old Ruth Nayame was operated on Friday and a large tumour was removed from her abdomen.
“She had a tumour in her abdomen weighing 25 kilogrammes. She is currently admitted in the main intensive care unit for stabilisation. Her condition is delicate but stable,” he said.
The Post Lifestyle last month carried the story of Nayame where she explained that her distended abdomen started five years ago and that she had been to several hospitals, all of which have failed to diagnose the condition.
“When the problem started, I thought I was pregnant. I had the cravings that a pregnant woman has; I would feel the baby move. I even used to go for antenatal. But to my surprise, the stomach just continued growing. I went to the hospital but I was told that there was nothing in the stomach. I did not believe the doctors, so my husband decided to take me to another hospital,” she said.
Nayame said her husband Lazarus took her to Mbala General Hospital where the couple was told that there was “nothing in the stomach.”
She says he later took her to UTH, Ndola Central Hospital and Cenozam in Kitwe but were told the same thing.
Describing her life over the past five years as hell, Nayame had appealed for help, saying she had been unable to take care of her family and enjoy her marriage.
And Bukata Women Empowerment Foundation director Lydia Sakeni Luka who has been helping Nayame while in Lusaka thanked Meanwood Property Development Corporation chairman Robinson Zulu for the help he rendered to Nayame and others while she was receiving treatment at UTH.
Luka also thanked community development deputy minister Jean Kapata for personally taking an interest in the matter.

UTH can do it; it needs all the support the nation can master. This includes improving leaving conditions of the learner doctors – not those dilapidated hostels we saw on TV the other day where those poor forks have to expend their time and energies drawing water before going to the ward. Can such an awful environment produce a smart surgeon? An emphatic no!

But ba Kasonde is too docile to be positioned at the nerve centre of the nation. Kambwili would make a grade here – just too many square pegs in square holes. Just 2 or 3 impromptu visits here and there would turn things around, and UTH can be up there.

Come on Tumfweko, you could have at least told us what kind of tumour she had and a description of the macroscopic findings. This info is important for awareness and medical research as well as educative!
