Maamba Residents Riot Over Suspected Ritual Killing, Burn Police Houses

Heavy rioting has broken out in Maamba district of Southern province over a suspected ritual murder. A police officer’s house has so far been set ablaze.
Residents also want to burn down the police station as they seek to met mob justice on a suspected ritual killer who has sought refugee at the police station.
About three weeks ago, a local woman was killed by suspected ritual killers. Her body was discovered two days ago in manhole near the stadium in Maamba.
Police picked up suspects but later released.
But today being the day of burial, residents have run amok, blocked the only entry/exit to and from Maamba.
They say that the night the lady was killed, she actually ran to the police seeking their protection but they just brushed her aside thinking that it was a tangle from one of her daily clients. The woman is said to have been suspected sex worker.
As she walked away from the police station, she met her fate.

According to a resident in Maamba, residents have burned down the house of police officer who was on duty that day. The angry residents followed the suspect to his house and broke it down looking for him.
The suspect, only identified as Davy, a local bus operator, managed to escape from the angry mob and ran to the police where the residents followed him.

An eye witness in Maamba says the police seem to be overwhelmed

Use laws available to arrest all who will be found wanting. How can they burn police houses constructed at a high cost by tax payers money? Torching a police post which was assisting them.

Isaac, in this case the Police failed the community! We all look up to the Police for protection but in the case of the unfortunate lady,(whether a hule or not, she was human so deserving of Police protection!) may be the chi cop on duty wanted to shag her even! So vulnerable she became that she decided to find her way to safety but alas, it was not be!

My heart bleeds to the very point of my being. if indeed, the late tried her best to get help from the people mandated by law to protect her and they failed her. then it is folly to blame the men and women who have opted to take the law into their own hands.

if the police cannot protect someone’s life, what then are they there for? what are they paid for? can the suspect be in police hands and may the law take its cause, or else hell will break loose. and those of you who know the suspect advise him not to even think of coming to Lusaka before this is fully concluded in the courts of law because he will be falling in the hands of a hungry lion.

@Kasenge, this story has neither political nor tribal links. Its just people unhappy with police performance, but in your tribally calibrated brains, you cannot just debate without fuulish political chants and sliding into your tribal dormain. What Chileshe is telling you is not to embarass yourself.

I would expect people to be a little bit sensible as they post on issues such as these, insults are just barbaric and never sort out anything. Strong constructive criticism is okay. People please, this is not a political thing, it’s about the police.

Whether someone is a prostitute or not human life was suppose to be protected. We lost a life by failing in duties of protecting any Citizen of this Country. She was supposed to be kept until the following morning when it was safe for her to go home.
On the other hand people should not take law into their own hands by going a step further by destroying the house of a Police Officer who was discharging his duties at that particular time.
People in the past use to get killed without evening coming out in the print and electronic media.
MAY GOD INTERVENE IN THIS CRUCIAL TIME OUR COUNTRY IS FACING.

The painful reality is that one vote from one of these thugs is worth the same as one vote of a Professor from UNZA! This is something I have never come to terms with.
The vote of an elite citizen should never have the same worth as that of an illiterate thug! Our nation will always be at risk of misrule because of this anomaly. The new constitution needs to address this. Citizens need to be categorized and NRCs should have categories. Everyone can start with the green one but we need to have a system where one can graduate to a higher class of NRC and Education achievement should be one of the top criteria in this categorization!

Most of our people are easily cheated and will tend to vote under the influence of gifts or bribes! This should be categorized as a felony and ECZ should have the teeth to disqualify and prosecute not only the candidates but also to blacklist such citizens who can’t exercise independent judgement! Such candidates and voters should be permanently barred from participating in future elections!
