Hichilema Backs Striking Nurses

United Party for National Development Party (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has appealed to Health Minister Joseph Kasonde to find a lasting solution to the strike action by nurses instead of threatening the nurses.

Speaking during his tour of the UTH this morning to assess the situation at the Hospital, Mr. Hichilema appealed to government to pay the nurses the salary they promised them and clean up all the distortions in the new salary arrangements.

Mr. Hichilema says it is the constitutional right of the nurses to express themselves in the manner they have done and that no one should use brutality or charge them.

He says it is unfortunate that the nurses are not in the wards to help patients, but that it is not their fault that this is happening as government has failed to honor its promise them.

Mr Hichilema says when UPND comes to power their approach to doing things will be different stressing that they will increase the salaries of nurses and other public service workers before increasing the salaries of ministers and the president.

He laments that Zambians are losing lives due to the carelessness of the PF government which he says has no love for the people.

And the striking nurses found at the hospital complained of being harassed by Police when they are only expressing themselves peacefully.

The nurses have also called for the resignation of their union President Tom Yung’ana accusing him of lacking direction.

And Mr. Hichilema appealed to the nurses to be strong and hold on stating that he is going to put pressure on the government to resolve the problem.

It is not enough for Hakainde to gain political mileage out of it because pipo are dying then him is trying hard to push his agenda. It reminds me of Mr SATA when he was in opposition at a time when ZRA were striking, you know what Mr SATA did,he went to ZRA and pleaded with them to go back to work and he told them that they are the hub of our economy and for sure they heed his advice. Now,Hakainde is encouraging them, i think this man has no human heart he is a Dracula. Just what type of a leader is he? God please do not give us this man as our leader not even in future!

HH is surely being childish here. People are dying in hospitals and he is telling the striking nurses to continue their work stoppage? This is shocking. Our dear nurses please do not listen to this self centered politician. Call off the strike and pursue your case in a civilized manner of dialogue. Form a small pressure group and talk to government.

HH has completely lost it here!! There is human life involved in the hospitals. People are dying due to this stoppage and a normal sane person with a conscience cannot go and tell the nurses to continue with their work stoppage!! He is being an accomplice in the patients’ deaths. SHAME ON HIM!!!

It is indeed not fair, the MPs have increased their allowances with a very big margin, Please give the nurses what they deserve. Clean the pay roll find a workable solution to the problem forcing them to work after threatening is actually demotivating them , therefore they will not work even if they are in wards, its even more dangerous.

if opposition means condemning the govt of the day when they increase salaries saying they are using Eurobond and on the other hand urge the govt to pay striking workers their demand which is not in the budget jst to win pipo then I would rather be with my UKWA, CNP, SATANA BUFI which ever name u call him and his PF. I mean there is nothing wrong with our calculator man to counsel our nurses with those analysis he keeps talking about. opposition can also mean advising striking workers to get back to work.

PF IS A PARTY WITHOUT DIRECTION AND PLANNING. THEY INCREASED NURSES SALARIES BY 100% LAST YEAR AND CAUSED SERIOUS DIFFERENCES IN THE SALARY SCALES OF CIVIL SERVANTS. INSTEAD OF CORRECTING AND HARMONISING GOVT PUBLIC WORKERS SCALES IN TERMS OF QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE THEY CREATE MORE CONFUSION.WHAT A PARTY? SHAME

Ministers gave themselves hefty salaries, surely is it because a good population was going to die that is why it was necessary to increase. PF supporters who are doing damage control must avoid beer drinking so that they could argue soberly and constructively than this senseless blogging we are seeing!

So it is HH to blame now? C’mon people. HH said it is unfortunate that the nurses are not in the ward doing their job. He said “UNfortunate”….meaning he is not happy with this situation. The fault is with this so called PF Government. How can you pay nurses and cleaners almost the same salary? What are they trying to say? That there is no need to go to school to get a better salary whilst in formal employment?
