More youngsters are having pre-martial sex and irresponsible sex can lead to unwanted pregnancy.
For men, there are several birth control methods or contraceptives, but are they foolproof? Dr. Uma Rani, Senior Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology with Delhi based Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, gives us details of the differentcontraceptives and birth control methods, which men can use.
Different contraceptives for men:
Dr. Uma Rani explains the different contraceptives for men, “There are very few birth control procedures for men and these can be divided into two – temporary and permanent – depending upon the requirement.”
Temporary method: barrier (condom)
Permanent method: Vasectomy
But according to Senior Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Dr. Uma there are other methods of birth control, “Apart from these two methods, researchers are exploring newer methods like contraceptive injections. However, these are yet to be put into practice.”
Is Vasectomy a Foolproof Birth Control Method:
Even though vasectomy is considered the best contraceptive method for men, it has a slight window for error. But Dr. Uma Rani still vouches for vasectomy, but she says, “Vasectomy is always the first option for willing couples, irrespective of the overall physical conditions of these individuals”.
Withdrawal as birth control method:
This is another contraceptive method for men; withdrawal or pull out method, demands control on ejaculation. In this method, the penis is withdrawn from the vagina seconds before ejaculation.
Non-penetrative sex or Outercourse as a birth control method:
In slang this is called dry humping – here you do not engage in vaginal intercourse. There is no penetration – oral, anal or vaginal.
Best contraceptive method for men:
Dr. Uma Rani, sums up her advice on contraceptives and effective birth control methods, “In general, temporary methods are more suitable for females in regards to acceptability, affordability and lower failure rates. For permanent sterilisation, male vasectomy remains the best option as it is safe, reversible, the operation procedure is easy and quick and one does not need any post-operative rest.”

Vasectomy is gud & is revessble only dat in countries like zambia it can’t be reversed due to lack of equipment to use & again da other problem is dat it does not protect against HIV/AIDS. Condoms remains the post option or un pernetratng is safer.

Due to the simplicity of the surgery, a vasectomy usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete. After a short recovery at the doctor’s office (usually less than an hour), the patient is sent home to rest. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, many vasectomy patients find that they can resume their typical sexual behavior within a week, and do so with minimal discomfort.
