Goernment Approves ZESCO Tariffs Hike

Energy Minister Christopher Yaluma has disclosed that government through the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) approved the proposal by ZESCO to increase electricity tariffs.

Early this year ZESCO had proposed to have its electricity tariffs increased by an average of 26% in order to enable the power utility firm to meet various operational costs, high inflation and increased demand for electricity in the country.

Speaking in an interview with qfm news, Mr. Yaluma has however disclosed that the approved electricity tariffs are below the 26% that ZESCO proposed.

Mr. Yaluma, who could not disclose the exact percentage of the electricity tariffs that have been approved, said that the ERB will soon announce the approved increased ZESCO electricity tariffs.

As much as we appreciate the demand for power ,government should be more creative than pushing all the unnecessary costs on its citizens.

This government of pf is killing the people of Zambia: no employment, introduction of toll gate, increasing zesco tariffs, removing subsidies on essential commodities, living in poverty after 49 yrs of Independence, no medicine in hospitals and clinics, please God delivery us from this pf government we are dying.

Infact me when they say we have rejected this & that i sometimes feel its just to give a wrong impression that they are very concerned about citizens. What i think is that they deal in a subtle way to say lets not alarm the public too early. Lets say we have refused for now but wait we look at your issue. Then allow months to pass then announce. Just to reduce the impact or simply to create an impression of resistance not to lose support from the masses. I said it is what i think. Also i didnt specify who the “they” are.

But the common man needs protection from monopolies like Zesco.

when it comes to salary increment its below 11% but when it comes to increase on the service delivery its above 25% why? Recently, you introduced toll fees and now you allow zesco to increase the tarrifs.During election campaigns the promise was people will have more money in their pockets.
Its seems the gvt. has no plans on how to generate funds. My advise to the gvt. is reposes kcm end of storry.Zesco is also enjoying monopoly because there is no one to compete with them.
