A 41 year-old Tanzanian National Dies After Swallowing 75 Pellets Of Cocaine

A 41 year-old Tanzanian national has died after swallowing 75 pellets of cocaine.

Drug Enforcement Commission Public Relations officer, Theresa Katongo has told QFM in a statement that the deceased who has been identified as Saidi Mwishehe Maya, 41, was coming from Morogoro, Tanzania, when he collapsed at Nakonde bus stop and rushed to Nakonde Referral Health Centre where he was pronounced dead.

Ms Katongo says postmortem revealed that one of the 75 pellets of cocaine burst in the stomach of the Tanzanian national thereby causing severe intoxication of the drug.

The Tanzanian national was about to board a Lusaka bound bus en-route to South Africa when he met his fate.

Ms Katongo says the Commission cautions members of the public to be alert and desist from being used as drug couriers, as the vice can lead to serious health implications including death.

Meanwhile, the Commission in Luapula Province has arrested a 17 year-old peasant farmer of Shijohn village in Chief Kambwali’s area for trafficking in 1.42kg of cannabis.

Also arrested in Luapula Province is Chiba Musonda, 34, a businessman of Chandwe village in Chief Kambwali’s area for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 1.34kg and Albert Chipamba, 20, of the same village for trafficking in 950g of loose cannabis.

All suspects will appear in court soon.
