Prof. Clive Chirwa Backtracks Plans to Renounce Zambian Citizenship, Govt Chides Him

GOVERNMENT says it will not entertain threats by former Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) chief executive officer (CEO) Clive Chirwa to release his passport as the latter still faces charges before the court.
Professor  Chirwa has however, backtracked on his earlier intention to renounce his citizenship if Government fails to hand him his passport.
And Prof. Chirwa was yesterday questioned by management at Inter-continental Hotel in Lusaka for holding a briefing at the poolside without prior authority.

On Friday, Prof. Chirwa threatened to renounce his Zambian citizenship if Government fails to release his passport within 24 hours.
But acting Minister of Home Affairs Geoffrey Mwamba told a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday that Prof Chirwa should be patient and allow the law to take its course.
Mr Mwamba, who is Minister of Defence, said the Immigration department will continue to secure Prof Chirwa’s passport until he is cleared of the charges of abuse of authority and failure to disclose interest when he served as CEO of ZRL.
“The seizure of Prof Chirwa’s passport was not done to frustrate or persecute him but was one of his bail conditions by the court.
“While the Citizenship Act provides recognition of renouncing of citizenship once one meets the requirements, for the professor to contemplate this route is not only premature but uncalled for,” the minister said.
He said Prof Chirwa has an opportunity to clear his name before the court and continue to live his life.
The minister said he had no doubt Prof Chirwa’s passport will be returned to him once he is cleared by the court.
“In the meantime, it is vital for him to exercise some patience and allow the due process of the law to take its course,” he said.
Mr Mwamba advised Prof Chirwa to apply to the court to have his passport released if he wants to travel out of the country.
“This is what late President Chiluba used to do.  And this is what former President Rupiah Banda does if he wishes to travel out,” he said.
Mr Mwamba said Zambia is a democratic country in which the rule of law reigns and rights of every individual are respected.
Prof. Chirwa told a media briefing yesterday that he will continue applying for the release of his passport although earlier attempts have not yielded results.
“Let the process continue because the passport was there for me to visit my family and return when the trial is on. There is Christmas and New Year coming and my 60th birthday is coming in January and I wanted to be with my family. So I will be putting in an application and I will come back before the 14th of January, when my trial begins,” he said.
Prof. Chirwa said he feels abused and misused because he had applied about three times for his passport to be released but received no response from relevant authorities.
“It seems my plan to speak to the media is working because the relevant authorities have started responding to my queries,” he said.
A hotel official confronted Prof Chirwa just as the briefing was ending.
Prof. Chirwa, however, continued with the briefing and asked the official, who insisted on talking to him, to “wait”.
Meanwhile, Mr Mwamba has disclosed that President Sata’s trip to Vubwi on Saturday was cancelled due to the funeral service for Deputy Minister of Health Patrick Chikusu.
Mr Mwamba said the trip has been rescheduled to this Saturday.
Dr Chikusu died in South Africa on Monday last week after he suffered a heart attack.

Prof. Chirwa’s case is lesson to all Zambians living in the diaspora. Zambia is a God forsaken country with incompetent leaders who will not appreciate your contribution but take pride in seeing you fall. They worship the Pull Him Down syndrome… So if you are abroad and you are itching to come help this impoverished country please stay where you with your expertise, muno mu chalo tabatasha ba fikala.

It is unfair for the way they are mistreating him. He just wanted to maintain the standards of living as that of USA. That’s why he solicited from the financial director(co-accused) to pay his high rated rentals.

Let be level headed. Do not be impressed by everyonr from in the in the diaspora especially in western nations. Most of them have no jobs. They just work in warehouses (mutoba mbale, doing work way beneath their degress ZCCM and and the government highly paid for.
How can a professor honestly be negotiating for petty things as an air ticket for his wife? Do not be fooled by the diaspora. Have you ever wondered why most of them call themselves Consultant of one sort or the other? They have no jobs. You give them CEO,God it is an opportunity to make a killing. Professor, which University is he associated to, what research is he doing and what is his contibution to academia?
It is not greed or pull down syndrome people. The man stuffed up, period. Surrender his passport? What bluff! Let him surrender his pasport… what next for him? Of course likely he will be on social welfare, yes the dole, if he stays there legally. Prof Chirwa has everything to gain in this country. That side he will always be a n@#&!r discriminated against by colour and his post code. Post Code because I do not think he stays in that castle and drives that mercedes benz(Probably he does good for him). I always wonder why an adult should a pose for a photo behind a castle? I was doing thise things when I was yound at University to homies back home that I ahve arrived in Mr Brown’s home country! At his age, it sucks really.
Please let us be sober and look at this issue soberly. Guys in diaspora we are not against you, just be genuine. There are more Zambians here with money than you ever think of and are investing and we envy them. Of course the weak in mind will always bring in Satanism, it is not it is purely hard work! So do not be over protective of the Prof. I saw he presentation and it was petty….frankly quite embarrassing coming from a Professor. The professor missed very simple strategic alliances to turn ZR around.
There has been so much talk of jealousy and greed about the Prof has been treated and thought I could straignten the harrow mindedness of reducing everything to such negativity when evidence is clear to show necessity to do the right thing. For the diaspora with good jobs good luck for those still struggling, your presence in those lands is not a qualification for anything. We pity you that you have wasted so much time, wish had realised early enough to come back and be something in Zambia and contribute to Zambia. If you have wasted so much time moving from one menial job to another from agents and are now in your forties/fifties with no experience and your livelihood very uncertain, hadr luck. However this is not your right for you to take adavntage of the ignorant homies and try to swindle the hard earned government money through funny and plagiarised strategic plans. You have chosed your destiny stay in that terrracd house ot high rise and probably just to die alone and cold.
I hope I have not offended anyone. Just adding my views.

    Cheers
