After being left out by the South African government in the memorial service programme last week, Former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda, who is 89, jogged up to the podium to pay tribute at the burial ceremony of late South African Leader Nelson Mandela in Qunu today.
He was today given the honour to give a key note speech.
Kaunda, a key figure in the history of African independence from colonial rule, got an extremely warm reception.
He said Mandela embodied the Biblical commandment to love your neighbour as you love yourself.
“This man is a blessed child of Lord God Almighty. He followed the commandments that God Almighty the creator has given to the entire human race,” he said.
Kaunda was handed a note on stage, presumably urging him to draw his comments to a close because of the tight timing of this funeral.
He joked: “Young man is controlling an old man who has fought Boers”, to warm laughter.

True report indeed, you should read the whole story again and understand instead of rushing to comment based on what you wanted to hear even before reading the story. He was left out by the SA government on the memorial program last week, ask yourself WHY. Did Guy scot address the mourners? Even if Sata had gone Kaunda would have gone there as well in another capacity but not to represent the nation. Mr Sata is our president and in better position to represent the nation not the supposedly retired man. By the way why did he announce a seven day mourning and then went to campaign. Was he mourning? I guess you are also aware that the malambo issue is still in court and that amounts to contempt of court and also a violation of electoral laws. Its not a problem to support someone but if you turn a blind eye on anything and support even when that person makes a mistake, you are not helping the same person you support.

@Zuma, you’re lucky that you’ll die much younger than Kaund’s age and will therefore never appreciate the difficulty of being coherent in speech at that age!!

the problem with you bloggers is that you fear white men like angels. KK came in the open and said what really transpired during the boers segregation rule of South Africa. that’s why you end up praising all white men regardless of their qualification. the inferiority complex is still too much in most Zambians. KK just said what used to happen not only in S.A. but in africa as a whole. the whites never used to convene with blacks even in the houses of God, despite being the pioneers who brought the bible to our continent. to those who blames our remaining icon are idiots. “it evil and un Godly to consider other beings inferior.

Like to many Zambians, the invitation of Dr. Kaunda to give a key note speech at the burial of a great son of Africa—Madiba, came as a welcome shock.
He spoke impromptu. For an audience like that, and especially that the ceremony was live on international channels, it is a rear feat: things can go wrong—I was literally on the edge of my seat.
One notable happening, after KK’s speech, people became more light-faced, they appreciated his presence: Zambia was well represented.
It remains upon us now to carry the candle forward: let it not be snuffed by the storms of our day (or night).
It remains upon us now to carry that mantle and do wonders for humanity.
Put in Mr. Mandela’s words:
“I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination, I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I’m prepared to die”
Go well Madiba.
Go well son of Africa.

KK disowned by his own, but respected by the rest of the world. A rejected cornerstone in his own country, they will miss him when he is gone.

Mwamba Mutale rise above nonsense and be level headed than trading in insults. KK spoke like a real grandfather, no fear no favour. A sense of humour and rethoric. Nice to see his freeness even to the extent of calling President Kikwete, young man. African Statesman indeed. Hamba Kahle Madiba!

It was not a keynote speech, but a vote of thanks. Applause does not determine a Keynote speaker.
sorry
December 16, 2013 at 10:30 am
Very little sense in what he said. He was supposed to give a vote of thanks and instead strted to talk about boers and other rubbsih without mentioning what the other speakers had said. Too old and dull to talk off the culf should have had a written speech.

Zambian pipo must be serious about issues what did kaunda say that resembled sense at that funeral really? The man is still out of touch with reality, the love your neighbour crap he talks about did he practice it the do unto others junk did he practice it in his 27 years he ruled this country as a dictator? Talk is cheap
