A TWENTY FOUR year old man of Ndola’s Chipulukusu has been sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing two chickens worth K54.62 ngwee from Ndola’s Shoprite Checkers.
Before Magistrate Benny Akende on Thursday was Jack Master of unknown address who was facing a charge of theft contrary to Section 272 Chapter 87 of the Penal Code of the Laws of Zambia.
Master pleaded guilty.
In passing the sentence, Mr Akende noted that the accused was a first offender who readily admitted the charge.
“I find the accused guilty of the offence upon his own admission of the facts as being correct and I convict him accordingly. I sentence you to three months imprisonment with hard labour with effect from December 2, 2013,” Mr Akende said.
In mitigation, Master begged the court for leniency as he had no relatives in Ndola as his family was in Serenje and that he had one child who needed his care as a father.
Particulars of the offence are that on December 1 this year, Master stole two chickens valued at K54.62 from Shoprite.
Facts before court were that Master was about to leave the store but security at the exit door were suspicious of him and an inspection in the plastic bag he was carrying, two chickens were found without receipts from the shop.
He admitted not having paid for the chickens and he was arrested and taken to Ndola central police station where he admitted having stolen the chickens.
