Why The PSL Does Less Zambian Deals- Denis Lota

Dennis Lota says PSL clubs would rather do business in Zimbabwe rather than Zambia because the risk valuation factors are lower.

In 2013 alone, only one major deal was struck fresh from Zambia to the PSL when Mamelodi Sundowns snatched midfielder Mukuka Mulenga in August from Power Dynamos.
The ex-Orlando Pirates striker said PSL clubs are put-off by the high value Zambian clubs place on untested talent straight off the shelf from the MTN/FAZ Super Division.
“The standard there (In the PSL) has improved tremendously. It is not like before where anyone could just come and play,” Lota said.
“The level in terms of technique and intelligence has gone up. The biggest thing for me is on the financial aspect.
“You see players from Zimbabwe they come to South Africa not solely focused on the money but how they are going to sell themselves when given the platform.”
Lota , who is currently a member of the Moroka Swallows backroom staff, said it was high time Zambian clubs revised their business strategies when dealing with PSL clubs.
“Teams are scared; ‘we do not even know this chap, we cannot pay so much’. People should know signing a player is a risky undertaking,” Lota said.
“Teams need to change the focus when it comes to financial issues. Do not demand too much from the beginning. There are always clauses that protect players.”

We tend to overrate our untested talent in this country. The one thing we should not run away from is that PSL has grown in stature compared to our league which has shrinked tremendously and this translates to individual player’s technical and tactical abilities on the pitch.

So Mr Lota you are insinuating that the PSL is far much better than the MTN supper league right? why should we be encouraging such primitivity to be hoovering around our beloved mother Zambia. i woul rather we start comparing ourselves to countries like Egypt which or DRC which are improving the local talent and hence when it comes to national team selection, it’s very easy to monitor the players and organise them as they will be from a local vicinity. take a look at England which flourishes the best talent clubwise but have nothing to show at national level because the players that shine in that league are all foreigners. viva local investment viva!

Lota is very right. We surely have a very inferior league; the PSL is by far better than our own MTN Super Division. Even at senior level, South Africa is making steady progress.
So, club officials, please heed Lota’s advice, he surely knows what he is talking about.

Lota is not exactly right. If the PSL had improved the offshoots would have been a better national team and clubs that win the continental competitions. Like Metal says the DRC and Egypt can claim to have better or improved leagues because we can see how their clubs are succeeding. As it is, except for this year, South Africa always produces also-rans in club competitions just like Zambia. If a PSL club is going for a Zambian player its because they have seen the talent. It shouldn’t be because he is cheap.
