Mugabe Renames Victoria Falls ‘We have to Get Rid of Its Colonial History’

President Robert Mugabe wants Victoria Falls to be renamed ‘the smoke that thunders’ to get rid of its colonial history.
The president of Zimbabwe believes Victoria Falls does not reflect its liberation heritage.
The waterfall, which is along the Zambezi River at the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia is one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Locals already refer to the landmark as Mosi Oa Tunya – which means ‘the smoke that thunders’.
The ruling party, Zanu PF, said the government would be instructed to get rid of all colonial names for towns and schools.
Ignatious Chombo, local government minister, said: ‘Institutions bearing colonial names must be changed and be given indigenous names… school syllabuses in schools must also change.’
It was first discovered by Scottish explorer David Livingstone who named it after Queen Victoria.
Jabulani Sibanda, leader of Zimbabwe’s vocal war veterans, supported the move.
He said: ‘David Livingstone was not the first person to see the Victoria Falls, they (the falls) must be rebranded Mosi Oa Tunya.
‘How can we have our barracks continue to be named after a foreign king?’
President Mugabe’s party came to power in 1980 and changed names of some cities and towns such as Harare.

Let the ***** change his colonial names of Robert Gabriel before he even considers trying to rename the Falls which are mostly in Zambia.

Once this ***** is dead nobody will attend his funeral like Mandela who accepted history and left british names in South Africa.

Let him change the name Zimbabwe too to Mugabeland.

Dude, read your history well…Mandela changed the names of the alot of cities after he was realsed. Most have local names. As for Mugabe he is just late in doing this, otherwise alot of countried value their own names and heritage…most Zambian cities have local names ..why cant Zimbabwe??

For this Ba Rongwe ba Mugabe bari right. David Livingstone was taken to the falls by the Makololo or Ma Toka people who even today refer to it as Mosi Oa Tunya, so what discovery?

Its not even renaming, its simply dropping a strange inheritance like ‘Victoria’ in a deep African jungle.

    ROBERT GABRIEL MUGABE.

Uuuhmm………..the change must start at home. Colonialism brought good things too i.e. introduction of superior technology and Christianity. Remember, Christianity did not belong to the British. It came to them also. The Lord Jesus Christ sent it there through very ordinary uneducated simple men and women.

Colonialism is part of our history. Erasing it is like denying it. Zambia as we know it today is a product of colonial history. Should we re-draw the map of the world??

@ Let You Say,’… Colonialism brought good things too i.e. introduction of superior technology and Christianity…’

Christianity being a good thing is highly debatable. Refresh, it was the Christian faithed nations that practiced worsed slavery on Africa.

They portray (ed) Jesus as white and blacks as devils ambassadors..Apatheid was a christian man’s teaching..

Why rename the falls which has already an indigenous name. The falls is called or it was already called Mosi-oa-Tunya until the white man gave it a ‘christian name’ called it Victoria falls.

Progress does not emanate from the white man. Just because he brought technology to you doesn’t mean its the white man who took it everywhere.

Zambezi falls would be a good name since the falls is on zambezi river just as Chishimba falls is on Chishimba river.

By the way, why did these Europeans mean by ‘discovering’ as if they made these things while they found them there with their local names.

He needs to start with his own name.

Change ROBERT to something that will not remind us of his colonial heritage everytime we hear his name.

That is best place to start.

Iam not a Mugabe proponent but the change of the falls’s name is 50 years late. Zambia couldn’t change the name at independence because the falls are on the border with then Rhodesia. However, after Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980 nothing stopped the two African Presidents from meeting and discussing the change of name of these falls. Naimwe ba Tumfweko stop perpertuating the mentally colonising notion that Livingstone ‘discovered’ the falls. That ‘discovery’ is very demeaning for black people. This means the haughty ‘discoverer’ didn’t count blacks among what he defined as ‘people’ so he had to discover us. Ukutumpa!

David Livingstone totally discounted the people living there and named the falls after his Queen! What an arrogant @$$!

There is no logic to the name ” Victoria” for the falls. I’m sure his descendants laugh secretly and wonder why anyone would keep calling it after their long-dead grandmother.
