CONSTRUCTION of Heroes National Stadium in Lusaka has been completed and Chinese contractor Shanghai is ready to hand over the ultra-modern structure to Government.
Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Zhou Yuxiao said in Lusaka that the contractor Shanghai has completed all the works and the 60,000-seater stadium will be handed over to the Zambian government next month.
Zhou said he is happy that the facility has been completed within the agreed period.
He said he is proud that Zambia has continued to make massive strides in all sectors, including sport.
The envoy is also satisfied and happy with the quality of work that Shanghai has done.
And Minister of Youth and Sport Chishimba Kambwili declared Government’s readiness to receive the stadium.
Kambwili said the Ministry of Youth and Sport will soon appoint a management committee that will take over the running of the stadium once it is handed over to Government.
He said, in the meantime, chief sports development officer Gibson Muyaule will be attached to the stadium until a committee to manage the facility is constituted.
The minister said the Government has already advertised for the jobs and they are waiting for approval from the Secretary to the Treasury.
Initially, the stadium was scheduled to be handed over to Government last year on October 15 but the handover was postponed due to the delays by Zesco and Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company to provide electricity and water, respectively.
Lusaka Water and Sewerage has since connected water while Zesco is yet to finish installation of power.
The Road Development Agency (RDA) is also yet to work on access roads.
Meanwhile, Kambwili has appealed to Zhou to assist Government with the construction of another ultra–modern stadium in Livingstone.
He also called on Zhou’s office to talk to Luanshya Copper Mines so that the sports complex in the area can be turned into a sports university.

I still remember the hot debate on how to name the stadium. That was interesting. It’s good we turned the page.

Some of us can assist with world class maintenance plans for the stadium over the weekends when we are not busy at work. The govt spent quite some money on training some of us in Germany on Maintenance of Industrial Infrastructure. Just whistle.
