Ndola Man Jailed For Mealie-Meal Theft

By MUBANGA NONDO
A 33-YEAR-OLD man of Nkwazi township in Ndola has been sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour by the Ndola Magistrate’s Court for stealing a 25 kilogramme bag of mealie-meal worth K62 from Shoprite.
Chief resident magistrate Paul Chisha on Tuesday jailed Kelvin Sichone after he pleaded guilty to theft.
The offence is contrary to Section 272 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
When the matter came up for plea, Sichone said: “I stole the bag of mealie-meal because I cannot afford to buy one … the price of the commodity is high.”
Passing the sentence, Mr Chisha said Sichone is youthful and he can work hard to feed his family instead of resorting to crime.
“I have heard your mitigation and the fact that you willingly admitted the charge but I wonder whether you will sustain the lives of your kids and that of your wife by stealing. Why don’t you find something to do?
“I, therefore, sentence you to one year imprisonment with hard labour with effect from January 7, this year,” Mr Chisha said.
Particulars of the offence are that Sichone, on October 22, last year in Ndola, stole a 25 kilogramme bag of mealie-meal worth K62 from Shoprite.
In mitigation, Sichone asked the court to exercise maximum leniency on him because he is married with two children.
Facts before court were that on the material day, a driver of Antelope Milling Company parked his truck at the Shoprite offloading bay in readiness to offload the mealie-meal.
The court heard that Sichone stole a bag of mealie-meal from the truck and some people apprehended him.

Release that man unconditionally. It is like nobody is accountable when people starve in this country.

This is sad. A man gets one year for mealie meal shuwa? One entire year, elo with hard labor.

The Justice system is flawed, and so too are the policies that allow poverty to be the norm. Human beings are suffering, this man will probably become a more hardened criminal by sending him to jail.
