Catherine Phiri Gets German

By YANDE KAPEMBWA and JULIET MAKASA
GERMAN boxer Pia Mazelanik has signed a contract to fight Catherine Phiri in a World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight silver title bout in March.
Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions director of operations Chris Malunga announced the development in Lusaka yesterday.
Malunga said WBC has officially picked Mazelanik for the silver title bout against the sensational Zambian boxer.
He said the fight will take place on March 15 at New Government Complex in Lusaka.
Mazelanik has so far fought 19 fights, winning 13 and losing five.
The 26-year-old boxer has drawn only once.
Malunga said the fight will be tough because both boxers have proven records.
He said Oriental Quarries Boxing Stables is working hard in ensuring the fight takes place and they have so far raised about half of the K750,000 budget.
“The WBC silver title is very important. It’s second only to the main WBC belt, so if Catherine wins this one, she will become the first Zambian ever to have won this title,” Malunga said.
Legendary boxer Lottie Mwale is the only Zambian to have won the WBC international title.
He said the Zambian will qualify for the WBC main title if she defeats Mazelanik.
“As usual, Catherine is working very hard in the gym and we are very confident that she will be ready to go for the WBC silver title fight. This is an opportunity for her to go a grade higher in her career and we are appealing to the corporate world to support her,” he said.
