25yr Old Lusaka Man Dies In Police Cells After Alleged Police Beating

A 25-YEAR-OLD man of Lusaka’s Chilenje areas has died after allegedly being beaten by a police officer.

Matias Banda was arrested on Friday evening for being in possession of a stolen phone and was found dead in police cells in the early hours of today.

According to detainees at Chilenje Police Station, Banda died as a result of the beatings he received from a named police officer.

“We were together with him on Friday when they brought him. We saw everything that the police did to him. When he (Banda) was brought, he was fine and did not complain of anything. We were released yesterday (Sunday) but what happened is that on Saturday, the same police officer came and started beating him with a pestle,” one of the eyewitnesses said. “After that, we saw him vomiting blood. He became very weak and we all saw that the beatings had affected him very much. That police officer should be taught a lesson because he kept telling Banda that he was responsible for all the crimes in Chilenje as he was beating him. He beat him very badly.”

A check at Banda’s residence found all the doors and windows closed and neighbours found outside the gate said his aunt had gone to the police to get more details of what happened.

Zambia Police deputy public relations officer Charity Munganga-Chanda said investigations had been instituted into Banda’s death.

“The body was discovered around 06:00 hours during our normal cells check. We did not arrest him officially; we only apprehended him for burglary and theft. We will issue a statement once all the investigations are done. If we find out that he was badly beaten by a police officer, action will be taken,” said Munganga-Chanda.

I bet the fellows that witnessed the beating will be discharged of their cases and disappear. The OB will disappear, or at least the relevant page.

Just wait and see. Next they’ll say he never was there but collected dead from behind the cop shop.

The fellows in the cell will be charged with the brutal murder, maybe.

Or the fellow will be found to have beaten himself to death by running into walls.

I saw a police officer drinking “tujilijili” on duty at lusaka emmasdale police station last month. The ***** refused to write the docket of my complaint because he was so drank. He then fell asleep right there in front of everyone at the front desk!! I called the Criminal Investigating Officer to come and see what was happening at the police station but she just told me to calm down and come back the next morning.
Most of these police officers are just savages in uniform that gives them the power to abuse vulnerable citizens.

Even in nkd one innocent man died in the same way. People had to riot and took the body back to the police that they wanted the living body. But police instead arrested the rioters who are stil in custody even today. I NEVER HEARD THIS ON THE MEDIA..
