“THE amount of vanity with which former Minister of Defence and embattled Kasama Central member of Parliament (MP) Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba is flaunting his wealth is not only disappointing but also appalling.
We refer to the US$200,000 (about K1.2 million) state-of-the-art Range Rover SUV car GBM presented to his wife Chama as a Valentine present, whose picture our sister publication, the Sunday Mail, reproduced on page three yesterday.
There is nothing wrong with open expression of our love for our spouses and partners, but there is everything wrong when such a gift is meant to show the whole world how rich one is.
It is surprising that a man who is a subject of investigations on serious allegations of corruption could post a toy worth over a million (billion in old currency) Kwacha, which he bought for his wife, on Facebook so that everyone can see it.
It will be interesting to hear from those who have been criticising the investigations.
If a man could splash that king of money, spending thousands of Kwacha on a ‘present’ for a member of his family there is every reason for Zambians to question how he acquired his wealth.
The police must speed up the investigations so that Zambians can know the truth about the source of the money Mr Mwamba has been bragging about and spending on such expensive toys.
It is obscene that a person who claims to be ‘sleeping’ on money could spend such a colossal amount on an expensive toy for the same wife he has been battering at a time close to 70 percent of the country’s citizens are surviving on less than US$1 (K5,600) a day.
Yes, Mr Mwamba has seen it fit to throw thousands of Kwacha around when children are dying by their thousands before reaching the age of five because of inadequate access to medicine, especially vaccines.
Latest statistics indicate that in a normal situation one out of 1,000 children die as a result of lack of access to the BCG vaccine.
But in Zambia one out of every four die! Each infant needs three doses of the vaccine to be fully immunised from life-threatening diseases, and each dose costs 50 euros (about K300).
Because of the prohibitive cost of the drug there have been challenges in its procurement as government steps up efforts to ensure it is readily available.
And according to the Zambia Medical Journal in the past decade Zambia has recorded a steady decline in U5MR (168 to 119 deaths per 1,000 live births) and IMR (70 to 56 deaths per thousand live births).
“However,” the journal observes, “despite the decline, these levels are still very high and unless Zambia revitalises its child survival interventions, it will lag in meeting the MDG 4.”
If Mr Mwamba was as loving a person as he wants the public – especially his Facebook followers to believe – he could have channelled the over K1 million he spent on the ‘present’ towards the procurement of such drugs.
Even the shallowest of minds is able to discern the egocentrism and vanity in the posting.
This is a man who has been using every opportunity to sing about his riches and how it is not his fault that his critics are poor.
It would have been a show of humility and love for the underprivileged if Mr Mwamba had built a health post or community school and presented it as a Valentine present to the poor.
That is what wealthy but conscientious citizens of nations do, and examples abound.”

GBM is spending his money on his wife, not on prost.itutes. What is wrong with buying your wife an expensive car? And are you insinuating that GBM is responsible for poverty in Zambia, and therefore should use his money to fight poverty? I feel pity for daily mail….

I could not agree more than what you have said Loose Canon. This show how shallow and stupidity PF are. They spent close K 72 Million (Old K72 BILLION) on useless and worthless by election just to have a majority vote in parliament to fix one Rupiya Banda at the expenses of development.Anothny Mwikuta have you asked yourself and your masters how much they are wasting through unnecessary blotched ministers and their deputies they have, the money that would have gone to eliminates the child death that you have talked about.Do not think we Zambians are fools who can not see how imprudent PF government is.You and your masters have spent over US $5 million just to have the two critical online tabloids closed.Be prudent yourselves with our money then asking or beg GBM later to do the same. Its only last month your PF govt denied him to contribute K300 000 towards the construction of the bus terminus in Kasama so what are you saying foolish man.

That’s a sign of LOVE.He started business alone when you were not BORN,that’s jealousy.let him enjoy with his wife and not prostitutes like what these uncultured businessmen we know who forgets their wives when they have money. GBM will never be responsible for any poverty in Zambia.

I feel pity for Anthony and his staff at Daily Mail. Since when did Anthony become a lecturer on what gifts should GBM buy for his wife? Anthony should bear in mind that how GBM spends his money is none of Daily Mail’s business. Infact, GBM can survive without depending on government resources. That is why he was able to resign after differing with Sata. The man made his money before he became a politician. I wonder what would happen to PF ministers if they were dismissed from employment. They would become street adults. It is foolishness to suggest that a man should not appreciate his wife just because he is being investigated for politically motivated cases. Anthony, do you have evidence that GBM is guilty? Are sure that GBM is using stolen money to buy gifts for his wife? Please leave GBM alone. I know you want to please your masters by persecuting GBM. Find a better way of pleasing your masters. Though, GBM has his own weaknesses, he has proved to me that he is a man and not male. He refused to betray Chitimukulu in return for 30 pieces of silver. Many of you would have opted to be a ”Judas” in order to keep your jobs. Though GMB has had marital challenges, he has demonstrated committment to his wife. He respects the family. The majority of Zambian men can buy expensive gifts for their prostitutes while their wives are languishing in poverty. I end by challenging Anthony to show us the gifts he has been buying for his wife in order to prove that he is a ”qualified”lecturer on morality.

When he was spending on PF campaigns, Zambia Daily Mail did not question but when he spends on his wife it becomes an issue. Come on Zambia Daily Mail, if your comment on GBM’s Valentine Gift was not malicious and was a manifestation of your genuine concern for the poor Zambians, you could have been condemning the wastage of tax payers’ money on PF induced bye-elections in Mufumbwe, Mpongwe, Msanzala, Livingstone, Luangwa, Kafulafuta, Solwezi East et cetera and not on GBM who did no use tax payers’ money to buy the present. This is hypocritical for Zambia Daily Mail; What right do you have to control people’s spending of personal money? Talk of wastage of tax payers’ money.

This ridiculous article is out of jealousy and envy! Nothing wrong in GBM splashing the wealth he has worked for any which way he wants! When he wants to help in the community he lives, he gets snubbed! Anyway this kind of nonsense against those who have worked hard to make their wealth is rife with PF governance! Jealousy will not help the country develop we should instead all strive to learn from those that have made it big to make Zambia a better place! Leave GBM alone. Guess we all gave something to our loved ones within our means.
