Zambia’s Oldest Singing Duet, Sakala Brothers, Split after 25 Years

Zambia’s most celebrated, admired and ambassadors of the nation’s cultural heritage, the Sakala Brothers have split after 25 years of working together.

Levy Sakala, member of the group confirmed to Times Entertainment that he will no longer be part of the Sakala Brothers.
He however, thanked Moses for the support he rendered to him during ‘trying moments.’ “I went through a near death experience in

Sakala Brothers

Sakala Brothers

August last year and as such I have decided to
dedicate my life to God who saw me through,” he
said.

Levy dropped the bombshell after missing this
year’s N’cwala ceremony concert at Wild Life
conservation in Chipata last week.
The Zamtel sponsored bash has become
synonymous with Ngoni’s and visitors to Chipata
as it is held to celebrate the Nc’wala ceremony
with a contemporary touch.

During the show, Moses was spotted a loner
without his ‘half’.
He tried to charm the audience with the dancers
while constantly reminding the audience that
Levy Sakala was not well and could not be part of
the celebrations.

When contacted for a comment why he had
missed the show just like the previous one during
the Road Safety Week awareness launch in Lusaka
recently, Levy said he has now started singing
gospel music with the Apostolic Faith Mission
(AFM) choir.
The choir has since released an album which they
intend to market soon.

“The Sakala Brothers has been there for a long
time and I wish them success but I have decided
to choose God over them,” he added.
The Sakala Brother’s have been hailed as the most
disciplined and celebrated traditional artists in
Zambia and represented the country well around
the world.
Efforts to get Moses failed as he was not reachable
on his mobile.

They have recorded hits such as Kumawa, Sandra,
Ndina Babaika, Tolilo Vovo, Puteni Chimwela and
recently released the smash hit album Born in
Matero which scooped the Best Recorded album at
this year’s Zambia Music Awards sponsored by
Mosi Lager brand.

There is time for everything, time to be born and time to die, time be together and another to be apart. But surely those of us who have grown up with the boys from grades one through secondary right in the heart of Matero, will dearly miss that combination. The face of the Sakala brothers will never be the same again! Better to rebrand even becuase that ”brothers” thing came from their surnames!…oouch! Levy all the best in your new chosen path and Moses be strong and soldier on!

Duet refers to the style where one man and one woman co-sing a song. Use correct chizumu or write in vernacular

Angela destroyed Moses’s marriage..since then, whether its coincidence or not their music has has not been doing very well. Ba Angela is almost non existent now..she is not heard. I think that marriage bt Moses and Angela is a big mistake they made, though they tend to refuse that Moses was already separated from his wife before Angela came in,..

It is really painful…that had been the longest singing harmony group in Zambia like CULTURE (JOSEPH HILL’s). Joseph has passed on but his cousin Walker and a friend have continued with UHURU, Joseph’son. So painful for Levy and Moses to part.

Gospel music is worse than secular music in that the secularism is openly primarily for the money while gospel despite also being for the same is marred by falsehood.gospel songs of today are tailored for commercial appeal and thus are not assimilated by the spirit.may this sakala chap differentiate between outreach and commerce failure to which he will not become a better person by virtue of singing gospel songs

Zambian journalists, so who is levy and Moses in the picture?

    • Trixy Reply

      March 3, 2014 at 12:28 pm

Levy is the light round/baby faced one (left) and Moses the dark one (|right). @ Imbanu I haven’t commented coz I am very disappointed with this split. It was even better for them to move to gospel music together. I was a fan for a very long time and to be dumped just like this?!! Ah no man!!!…its sad…But then you can take a horse to drink water but cant force it to…I bet Levy tried to convert Moses but failed to coz Moses is a “Sansakuwa” (womanizer) kind of guy….(Just my observation).

One time my clasman Oliver Mtukudzi was asked by his fans to do a gospel album. in responding to this he said ” most people just want me to mention the name jesus but actually what i sing is gospel enough.to this effect what we are calling traditional music may infact be gospel if we realize that the bibile is full of traditions by the jews of which Christians have adopted. jospel is about people welfare and Tolilo VoVo is about anione-anione just like the scribes and the teachers of law in the bible….how about that?

    • Trixy Reply

      March 3, 2014 at 12:37 pm

Oliver…You are right to a certain degree coz one of the means of the word gospel is “a set of beliefs held strongly by a group or persons”. But we are used to the fact that gospel automatically entails that the word God or Jesus has to be mentioned. I stand to be corrected though.
