Katongo, most famous in South Africa for scoring a hat-trick for Zambia against Bafana Bafana as well as his spell in the top-flight with Jomo Cosmos, has played two games for struggling Arrows.
But things have changed since he last played in the country’s domestic League. Here’s what he has to say about his new challenge.
What do you make of the situation at Golden Arrows since you arrived here?
I have been here for two weeks now. I’m new here and I think we have good players and we will see what is going to happen and what is important is to win games and play as a team. Of course it’s a very difficult situation and as a team we can make something.
How do you feel about being thrown straight into a relegation battle?
I came here to take a risk and the pressure is for everybody and nobody doesn’t have pressure. Even in the house, wife and girlfriend, there is always pressure, but you need that pressure to move on. We know what is happening at Arrows and there are no two ways about it, and you can see we have got 9 games left [to save the club].
What influenced your decision to join Arrows?
“I can’t comment on that one but what I can say is that the person who wants more of a player, that’s where you play, and that’s where I will go. You don’t take yourself where they don’t need you the most. If the owner of the club needed you most then you have to take it. On the other side I know what I’m doing and I know what I want and that’s why I’m here. I’m here to enjoy myself in football but otherwise there is a lot of pressure. The log doesn’t lie. We are on the bottom of the log but we have to work hard to collect points.
Do you think you can save the club from relegation to the First Division?
I don’t think one player can save the club. Teamwork can save the club. I’m here to make history and I have won the Afcon and that the history as well. It’s a tough one and you make something else. Can we make something else? It’s a challenge and it’s a new chapter to make something. All those I have won will be talked about but as players we need to move on from that. It was good for my country of course, but it’s different now and I have been away for possibly eight years. Everything has changed and I will try to squeeze in myself with changes. Matches are faster now so I have to adjust myself to fit in.
Big game against Sundowns on Saturday in the Nedbank Cup. What is your priority between the League and the cup?
I think we need to focus on the League in my opinion. We still want to stay in the League and avoid a relegation scrap. From the coaches’ side and players, we have to be prepared for everything now until the end.
