NGOCC has saluted the Zambian women, especially mothers for their daily struggles in making the lives of their children and society at large better.
In a message to mark Mother’s Day, which falls today, NGOCC executive director Engwase Mwale said it was a fact that mothers were the bedrock of any family and indeed community.
Mwale said it follows, therefore, that women were also the foundation of the nation.
“On behalf of the women’s movement, we would like to use this day to celebrate mothers, motherhood, and the influence that mothers make to the lives of their children and society. In commemorating this year’s Mother’s Day, we call upon all Zambians to appreciate the role that women and mothers play in our lives. Let us use this day to show appreciation and love to our mothers who have cared for us to be what we are,” she said.
Mwale said as people celebrate motherhood, they should also reflect and change some of the cultural practices and traditions, which create gender inequality between women and men.
“It is high time that we moved as a people to begin to appreciate and complement each other. In this time and era when mothers are also career women with multiple roles as professionals and parents, men and society at large must support them and take up roles which ordinarily were assigned to mothers or women,” said Mwale.
Mother’s Day is a celebration honouring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in spring. (April-May in the northern hemisphere, October in Argentina, but northern hemisphere spring, May, in Australia).
It complements similar celebrations honouring family members, such as Father’s Day and Siblings Day.
