Two Ndola police officers have been detained after a 58-year-old woman escaped from custody.
Annie Kaunda, 58, of Ndola’s Masala Mine township was in the holding cell at Ndola Magistrate’s Court when she escaped after appearing before the courts for one count of theft on Tuesday.
Copperbelt commissioner of police Joyce Kasosa confirmed the incident in an interview in Ndola yesterday that a prosecutor and a court orderly were arrested on Wednesday afternoon in connection with the disappearance of the accused.
Ms Kasosa, however, could not disclose the names of the two officers as the matter is still under investigation.
She said after the woman’s escape, the two officers did not report the matter as is supposed to be the case.
“These two officers were wrong not to report to relevant authorities that a suspect had escaped,” she said.
Ms Kasosa said senior officers are investigating the matter and if the two officers will be found wanting, they will face a criminal charge.
She said at the moment, the case is being treated by the police as an internal matter.
Ms Kasosa said it was negligence on the part of the officers and they aggravated the matter by not reporting.
Kaunda is facing one count of theft of items worth over K200 from Shoprite Checkers Kafubu Mall branch.
