An opposition MMD district leader in Luapula Province says the party president Nevers Mumba will lose his position should an extraordinary national convention be held because of his undemocratic leadership.
Nchelenge MMD district chairman, Chibale Bulanda, said yesterday that Mumba had lost the support of his two vice-presidents, Michael Kaingu and Brian Chituwo among other senior party officials.
“He has also lost support at district, ward and branch level in many parts of the country,” Bulanda said
He said Mumba was aware that things were not good for him in the former ruling party despite his attempts to correct his mistakes and that he would do anything to hold on to the party presidency.
“Power is sweet. Dr Mumba will do anything to maintain the MMD party presidency. He does not want to lose it,” Bulanda said. “That is why he is afraid to go for a convention.”
Bulanda alleged that Mumba had introduced undemocratic principles in running the 24-year-old political party.
“Dr Mumba’s matter is before the court of law, so we cannot discuss it. But he is a leader who has been effecting undemocratic party appointments, like the appointment of Muhabi Lungu as new MMD party national secretary, which is an example of an undemocratic decision,” Bulanda said.
He said lack of resources had also negatively affected the party.
“There are no tangible programmes happening in the MMD. The party coffers are dry. The mobilisation activities have been stuck because they require resources,” he said.
Bulanda disclosed that Mumba was currently on a national tour and was expected to be in Luapula Province early next month
