Former President Rupiah Banda has advised Malawian President Joyce Banda to concede defeat if she has lost the May 20 general elections.
Mr Banda told journalists in Lusaka yesterday that politicians participate in elections either to win or lose and it is important to accept defeat when one loses.
“The most important thing is that once you have had elections, learn from this stupid man [himself] that once you have elections and you have lost, especially if you were in Government, concede and proceed as we have done in our country,” he said.
Mr Banda said the outcome of an election should be respected by all politicians because it represents the will of citizens.
He said politicians have time to campaign and convince citizens to vote for them and their vote should be accepted.
“When we were concluding our campaigns in 2011 in Mandevu, I said that we have all campaigned and for the next 48 hours, nobody should campaign but we have to let people speak their opinion on who they want and once they have spoken it’s final, we have to proceed,” Mr Banda said.
He said although he does not know the exact outcome of the elections in Malawi, politicians should understand that there is always a winner and a loser in any election.
On Friday, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announced that Ms Banda’s rival candidate Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had taken a lead of 42 percent with 30 percent of votes counted.
Ms Banda of People’s Party (PP) was in second place with 23 percent.
This prompted Ms Banda to annul the polls stating that elections were marred by rigging, multiple voting and computer-hacking.

Bwana RB, elections in Malawi have been complicated and it is difficult to know which path to take now. It is not easy, pray for this country to resolve their issues as they deem fit, otherwise, for JB herself, she has already conceded that she is out of contention.

The problem is beyond Joyce accepting defeat, accepting defeat to who? There are two camps claiming victory and she is neither of them, and there are serious allegations of vote rigging. The problem is not incumbent cling to power but it hinges on credibility of the votes counted, system was infiltrated and the Electoral Commission has called for vote recounting after admitting rigging by some unscrupulous party officials from one of the purported winners and process has just commenced. It might take weeks to clear the mess and country can’t stay without president, she will go an appropriate time.

RB Malawi isn’t the first country to have a political impasse after a general election. Remember Zimbabwe and Kenya had similar situations. JB has willingly accepted defeat but she told the nation why the elections were nullified. They were a lot of anomalies before, during and even after the elections. MEC (Malawi Electoral Commission) lacked capacity to conduct the first ever tripartite elections. Parties lodged complaints to them. The ruling party complained about vote rigging, the opposition parties ie DPP, UDF and even MCP all complained about vote rigging either against the ruling Peoples Party or amongst themselves.
I believe the best way to go about it is to have a power sharing deal (GNU)
