In an interview at State House yesterday, President Sata said people had the right to talk about his health and that was why he was informing them that he was fine and working.
President Sata said he was answerable to Zambians, hence his decision to talk about his health.
“They have every right to talk about my health. I was a reporter when you were still at school that is why I have to tell them I’m fine,” he said.
“Without people talking about somebody I’m a newsmaker. And me being a newsmaker, it is for me to prove that I’m not sick. It’s for me to prove that as I’m sitting here I’m still fine,” he said.
President Sata said Zambians fought hard for their democracy, including the right for them to talk about their leader’s health.
“At least you have seen I don’t look sick. And these people are saying they want a medical report. These people in the opposition are saying they want a medical report. First of all, they can’t say they want a medical report; they must bring a medical report proving that I’m sick before they can say ‘We are going to ask the medical board’,” he said.
“What is the medical board going to do because there is no report about me being sick? So the medical board they are talking about, they are wasting their time.”
President Sata said people could talk about his health but using it for political gain was wrong.
He said people were free to speculate.
“This is the democracy we were fighting for. Now they can speculate about my health. People have their own democracy. They have been speculating,” he said.
President Sata said smaller parties like UPND wanted to fight him using his health so that they could ascend into government.
“Normally, people who are speculating on many things and especially my illness, it’s HH Hakainde Hichilema. They speculated in 2006, they speculated in 2008, 2011 and now they are still speculating so that they can get into power,” he said.
President Sata said during the 2011 elections, there was a vicious campaign against him based on his health and he was not surprised that the same people were talking about his health again.
On Thursday, Hichilema said the UPND had received, with huge relief, the news that President Sata was well.
Hichilema said Zambia needed a fit and healthy President Sata to deliver a people-driven constitution.
“As UPND and as a country, we cannot afford another challenge that can further destabilise the country at any level of government, even worse at the level of the Presidency,” he said.
Hichilema said it was not right for anyone to speak ill of President Sata whenever he was believed to be unwell.
On Wednesday, President Sata said he was working because he was fit and fine.
In a phone call to The Post, President Sata said reports that he was unwell and had been evacuated for treatment outside Zambia were false.
“They are saying I have been evacuated, evacuated to where?” he asked.
“The opposition even wants to move a motion that they want a medical report before Parliament. We are ready for them.”
President Sata told The Post that he was working normally.
“I’m fit, very fit. I’m very well,” he said.
“You know the nature of the office I’m in. I don’t know the motive of the opposition.”
Opposition MMD president Nevers Mumba on Monday said there were signs that the President was not well.
“Listen, if these signs are signs that the President is not feeling well, all of us stand with him and sympathise with him, but they should not make him do things that are going to make him worse. Zambian people do understand in terms of sickness that they would go ahead and allow the President to take leave until he recovers. They must not push him to do things that are going to aggravate his situation,” Mumba said.
“I think that PF now has to face reality; is the President capable of carrying on or not? This is not a situation where you have something against the President. I am just asking a very noble question. Are these people (PF) trying to force the President to do things that he cannot physically afford to do? He is a person with a family and these questions should be answered and the responsibility lies in the hands of the Patriotic Front and the family, to be able to give guidance so that Zambians can have a President speaking for them on these important days and be able to represent them in other parts of the world.”
And President Sata says he expects newly appointed Ambassador to South Korea Mumba Kapumpa to be sober as he takes up his position.
Speaking after swearing in Kapumpa and Salome Mwananshiku as High Commissioner to Malawi, President Sata told Kapumpa that the South Koreans were extra intelligent and as such, he expected him to be sober.
“You will be dealing with extra intelligent people, so I expect you to be sober,” President Sata said.
He then asked Kapumpa when he would be leaving for South Korea, and he responded that he would be leaving next month.
But President Sata advised him to leave the same day (yesterday) and that if Kapumpa was not interested, he should inform him so that he could appoint another person.
And speaking to journalists later, Kapumpa said he would leave as advised by the President as long as all the logistics were put in place for him.
“I am not going to an already established mission but going there to establish one. So I am going today as long as you the taxpayers prepare all the logistics for me,” Kapumpa said.
And Kapumpa said he would see how Zambia could work together with South Korea in areas of investment in technology.
“This is a tremendous opportunity given to me to go and open this mission. In my career, I have always been sent to establish new institutions such as the stock market in 1992, so this is a big challenge but with God’s help, I will succeed,” said Kapumpa.
Meanwhile, Mwananshiku said she would study the situation in Malawi.
She said Zambia and Malawi were one.

It is nice to hear your claims that you are fine shikulu but next time shed more light on when and where you served as a reporter, which media house was so unfortunate to have you as reporter and who were your classmates in that journalism class? For all we know, you were a constable and a railway sweeper.

Late Bingu Wa muntharika also defended the state of his. health. even asserting that he was as tough as the steel on the train tracks. In a couple of months he was a goner! Yes, the presidency does not keep one immune frm infa!
