Politics Centered On Individuals Is Driving Us Backwards-Chitala

DR Mbita Chitala, a Pan-Africanist, says in an interview that most of political parties in Africa have abandoned the issue of service to society.
“Political parties seem to be personalised or run by warlords of one kind or another. In my view, it is important to get back to the basics of where our forefathers like Nkwame Nkhuruma, Mwalimu Nyerere or Dr (Kenneth) Kaunda and (Nelson) Mandela started from,” Dr Chitala said.
“Ideals that brought us independence and democracy; our forefathers taught us that politics must be for the service of mankind and that our politics must purely be for serving fellow men in our society.”
Dr Chitala said politics centered on individuals would not take the continent anywhere.
“In fact, it is driving us backwards further to inequality and underdevelopment. So the challenge we have is to get back to the basics of service and reduce centralisation and devolve power to the masses. Then something will begin to work,” Dr Chitala said.
“Every political party must reflect and get back to the basics instead of being run as a means of self-enrichment and so on.”
He observed that Thabo Mbeki was correct in crying out that Africa needed to review the problem.
He said in doing so, political parties ought to streamline their activities on progressive ideals and ideologies that could serve the people.
“If they (political parties) go out there blindly simply for power, it will not do for our country. They must first of all sit down and reflect on ideas and programmes that can serve our people,” said Dr Chitala.

Chitala, alino walanda ningo wikolo. I wonder if we still have that element of the past population’s good thought. I beg you to keep on exposing the fundamental reasons for our fight for freedom from British rule. We still have the chance to start developing this land. Ciza uli?
